  • Only good for small catalogs

I find that working with catalogs with more than a 5 or 6 dozen images bogs the software down, and that it somehow loses the thumbnails with greater frequency the larger the catalog gets—it ends up necessitating rebuilding the thumbnails only to lose them over and over. I tried making the thumbnails as small as possible and it doesn't help. It ends up being useful for organizing images in a small way, but its limitations are frustrating even as its design is clean and inviting.

If you could please reach out to me directly at hello@pixlpath.com, I'd like to investigate. I'll try to reproduce what you described on my own, but I could use a few more details. My hypothesis is that when the previews are generated, they're briefly stored in the system's temporary directory until a catalog is saved, so if a drive is running low on space, the system could potentially be trying to clear some. Please get in touch, and I'll work to narrow down and fix the problem you've experienced.
  • Love it, but...needs password protection

Even a simple password offering, but Face ID or biometrics on iPhone/iPad would be better.

I'm surprised. A lot of my assets are proprietary and stored in a network volume that can be accessed by others. I think you should consider some basic protection.

Thanks for the review. I'd be happy to chat with you about password protection. Catalogs that are stored on an encrypted drive or a secured network are protected by those enclosed environments, but I'm guessing you mean adding a password to and encrypting individual catalogs... which would introduce some performance degradation. Reach out to give me a better idea of what you're looking for and I'll investigate potential solutions. You can reach me directly at hello@pixlpath.com.
  • My new go to for browsing photos!

It starts and loads photos (and graphics too I recently discovered!) fast and lets me sort them quickly but as a forgetful… I mean “selective memory” designer, the advanced filtering is clutch! A lot of times I know I took a photo but forgot when or specifically where but will remember a general detail like which part of the city or if I rated it high and Pixlpath will help me square it down. Also as a hoarder, I can’t bear to delete any photos so the rating system is key. If I go back to a set of photos, I don’t have to re-examine why I chose one photo over the another, I just have to trust my rating!

Thank you for the review! I try to keep all types of visual artists in mind when I'm developing new features. I'm glad to hear it's working well for you.
  • Super useful, more efficient way to interact with media files

I wanted to wait to write a review until I got a good feel for the app. I appreciate how much has been added with the updates in the few months I've had this. It works well for organizing my photos, but I've been using it as a convenient way to look at a folder of media files in lieu of Finder.

Thanks! I've been hard at work adding new features. Glad to hear you like them. :-)
  • Not feasible for large library

Extremely slow both to build library on import and navigation. Disappointing purchase.

    Developer Response

I'd be happy to help narrow down what's causing a bottleneck, but without more details on the files you're importing, hardware, and how large of a catalog you're attempting to create, it's challenging for me to diagnose. Each image that's imported needs to be opened and downsized, so processing time will vary depending on the file sizes and device used. I push out updates quickly if anyone reports an issue, so simply reaching out often leads to a solution. Alternatively, Apple will refund your purchase.
  • Serenity Now

Here's what I like: It feels like a Mac app. Most of the DAM systems I have tried feel like they were made for Windows and shoehorned onto Mac. This feels just right. I like the design, I like the simplicity, I like that it works on iOS if I need it.

Here's what I want: EXIF editing. I can see EXIF, but I can not change it. I want to add copyright and gps coordinates.

Overall, it does what it says and it does it well. Looking forward to seeing how this develops.

Thank you for your review! Modifying EXIF information is currently in development (users on social media voted to make the iPad/iPhone version a development priority). Stay tuned for new features and thank you for your early support!
  • Love

Works great. Using it to store my artwork. Convenient that it lets me switch between iPad and MacBook. Appreciate the clean interface. Emailed the developer about adding support for an extra file and heard back right away. What a refreshing change of pace.

Thank you so much for the review! Glad you're finding the app useful. I'm working on adding support for the drawing app document you asked about. Stay tuned. 👍
  • Excellent App

I had been looking for a Digital Asset Manager (DAM) App for some time to replace Apple Photo which I only ever used as a library, any edits being made in Affinity. Some apps were overly complicated and mostly incorpoated editing software which I did not want and none of them could display an Affinity Photo or Designer file. Then I found PixlPath. This app does everything I want it to do in a very straight forward way. I contacted PixlPath to enquire about Affinity files and Chris responded with a lot of information. He was able to add limited functionality for Affinity files in his last update which I'm very grateful for. Now I can see those files along with all the others, link back to finder and open them from PixlPath in Affinty Photo 2 and Designer 2. Couldn't be happier, many thanks.
