The Problem

How It Works
The app works by reducing your volume slowly over time. The user doesn’t even notice their volume is reducing over time, since their ears adapt to the lower volume in a process called the stapedius reflex and temporary threshold shift, which means users are able to listen to their music at a safer volume without sacrificing enjoyment.
Intuitively Runs in the Background
The app is easy to use and works with any headphones or earbuds that you use with your mobile device. Simply download the app, connect your headphones, and you're ready to go. The app runs in the background, so you don't need to keep it open to stay protected. The app is very intuitive to use. Users can start the hearing protection with the “Protect Hearing” button and the protection will start. They can adjust their goal volume, or how low their volume will get, by dragging the goal volume up and down. Finally, a summary box provided information on how much the app has benefitted the user.
Discouragement and Encouragement Through Gentle Sound Reminders
In the settings page, the user will be able to customize the types of reminders they will get while the “Hearing Protection” button is turned on. These reminders will be sent through unobtrusive sound effects in the background which gently let the user know about a reminder. The reminders are sorted into two categories: discouragement and encouragement. The discouragement reminders allow the user to choose to be gently alerted whenever they take an action which can be harmful for their hearing. The two types of discouragement reminders include:
1) When the user increases their volume
2) When the user sets their volume at a very high and potentially harmful level
Likewise, the encouragement reminders allow the user to choose to be reinforced for taking actions that are potentially beneficial for their hearing. The three types of encouragement reminders include:
1) When the user decreases their volume
2) When the “Hearing Protection” is used for a certain amount of time. Options include 15, 30, and 60 mins
3) When the volume is successfully reduced all the way to the goal volume
The app comes with only the second and third types of encouragement reminders enabled by default, and everything else disabled, so that it is not immediately intrusive for the user, but the user can choose to enable/disable as many or as little reminders as they wish.
