Reviews of Collage Maker

Intuitive to Use, Professional Results

I decided to leave a review after noticing this was recently released and had no reviews yet. It’s very well done and it would be a shame for others to miss out just because it’s not rated.
The description lists a bunch of use cases for the app and I have to say there way too many to list. Just about anyone would have ways to use this tool to their benefit. I’m a portrait artist and was looking for a cool way to show my work. I also plan to renovate antiques and will use it for that as well. I’ve also been thinking of making creative coverup tattoos, and again would need to show my work. It’s not the only app of its kind out there, in fact it’s not even easy to find it twice in case you wanted to leave a review. I’ve tried a few others but I gave this a shot because there are no subscriptions. It’s also free at this time, but I don’t have any issues paying a one time fee for tools I use. (As an aside- I think subscriptions are appropriate for continuously generated content, but not a finished product).
I’m giving five stars because it does what it says it does very well, it doesn’t interrupt you with ads, and doesn’t needlessly make you walk through a tutorial upon opening. Seriously it took me all of five minutes to go from searching “before and after” in the App Store to saving my completed video file. I’ve probably spent more time finding the app again and writing this review.
Here are some specific observations and suggestions.
1. I was prompted to leave a review immediately the first time I opened it and I declined. It may ask again, but I was ready to leave one after only a few minutes of use. I suggest adding a link to review the app in the settings page. Once installed, the name of the app is slightly different than it’s listing in the App Store, so searching for it to leave a review took a while.
2. Positioning photos was way easier than others I tried. So many are built for showing photo edits with assumption that the two would line up the same. This means (in some apps) the photos would have to already line up as they sit in your camera roll. I was very happy to find that I could freely pinch, zoom, and rotate the two photos until they lined up just right. However, I think anyone using it to show photos taken at different times would benefit from the addition of some way to line them up besides adjusting the right half of one to match the left half of the other. I suggest incorporating a transparency/opacity slider, and/or picking three key points to match up. This could lead to new ways of showing the transition like fading and morphing.
3. Importing photos require access to only selected photos, not full access. I really appreciate how unintrusive the developer wants to be (No data collected either). The only problem I foresee with not giving full access is the way iOS presents the photo picker. I think it may take quite a bit of scrolling and searching if you had to go back a ways. It’s really an iOS problem, but the work around be allowing full access I think.
4. Other apps I tried before this only let you save your work as a video or gif, while here you can save multiple projects in the app and come back to them again. I use the term “projects” because I think that’s what they’re called due to my choice of “personal projects” as my industry during setup. This choice is so far permanent. I suggest adding a option to customize the name of the folder, or even add others. So instead of one “projects” folder, I could have re-tatted, tiqued-up, and poor-traits.
5. Sometimes I get stuck staring at a portrait I drew wondering what’s off. I’m not trying to brag, but even with the slider it’s tough to tell why they don’t look the same. Maybe a color changing tool would help highlight the inconsistencies better.
6. I know “before & after” implies two photos, but it would be cool to add more. There are easy ways to stitch video together, but you’d have to get them lined up beforehand. Its would be much easier as part of the initial process. The biggest part is already there- being able to revisit you projects would allow you add version 2.1 or whatever to the video later.
I hope other users find this helpful. Thanks to the developer for good work, fine polish, and generosity.
