  • Great fun.

Its an innovative app that works well and has great features. The tracking is about 95% of perfect. There are still some issues (at least with my handwriting). Ideally the app would work in the background while we write music and we are not aware of anything but the creative process. Its not quite there yet but its not far off. Maybe a few more updates or versions.

  • Pretty good, convenient

I really like the convenience of being able to leisurely create lead sheets without breaking out the MIDI keyboard into a computer I hardly use. This new version recognizes accidentals much better, though it still has occasional issues with sharps. Hopefully it will continue to improve and become even more useful.

  • Promising

I bought this closer to first launch and it has come a long way. The recent upgrade to version 2 seems to have added audio to the note you are placing which makes it nicer to use as you do not need to play the song every time you want to check the note is in the correct place. I am still waiting for the ability to take a picture of an existing score to notate in this program as I am waiting for the promised play to your iPad and have it transcribe the notes. I find that it still does not recognize what I draw very accurately and I need to erase the note and start over quite often. I wish that you could erase its training of your penmanship and re-train it to learn your writing over again as I think this might clear up some of the problems I am having. Overall, with the newest feature of playing the the note upon drawing it, it's a cool app when you are sitting around and something musical inspires you.

  • Awful - feel cheated.

For the money you pay for this app you would expect a whole lot more than this. I only bought it because of the update which includes drum kit support. This is simply not true. Notation is hardly ever correct, drum markings and simple cymbal notations not understood. A terrible drag and drop system implemented that makes a handwriting notation app idea redundant. Would like a refund - massively disappointed. Great idea but poorly executed and does not live up to its promises. Will gladly amend this review if drum notation is fixed.

  • Very good so far

Really great start to this app. Not quite fast and feature-rich enough for professional but great for jotting things down in rehearsals and quick sketches. I'd like to see text entry and improvements in the lyrics input. Keep up the good work.
  • Disappointing

Downloaded current version of NotateMe to my brand new iPad Air with high expectations. Was disappointed to experience how difficult it was to use. With my new stylus I set out to write a short 4 part chorale. Forget it! Lowering my expectations drastically I tried to write a C major scale in quarter notes. Way too cumbersome. Great idea but it's got a long way to go to be considered a serious mobile app. Until then hand me down my pencil and paper. I generously gave 2 stars for effort not for performance.

  • Pretty good

Definitely a learning curve to use. Wish there was a way to print parts from a score. Copy and paste functions limited.
  • Tons of potential!! Could use an update though...

The idea is brilliant - the execution could just use a little polishing. I was very hopeful, and it does prove very helpful, but better hand-writing recognition algorithms and a wider vocabulary of articulations, etc. would be very helpful. Developers - don't give up on this! Keep working on it, cause it could a wonderful app. Just needs a little TLC right now.

  • Newbie

I'm not a composer and I do not play an instrument, I sing in amature choir and although I understand musical theory I cannot read music and just sing it. I need to hear it first then the music copy means something.

I purchased the full version and set about entering a piece on my iPad with a stylus. It worked a treat and after a while it said that it had finished the learning sequence. I had not realised it was even doing that. It is very intuitive and I have had no problems entering notes with the stylus or my finger. There are issues, for instance to change a key mid score you just write the sharps or flats but oddly it does not work with if the change of key consists of a natural.

I emailed the support with the issue and had a prompt reply. Even without this ability to change I am finding it invaluable as the playback is excellent and I've started entering half a dozen bars just to learn a particular troublesome section.

I have exported it as a Midi and emailed to my computer. Sibelius 6 opened it perfectly. I look forward to the next release, if the planned features work as well this version it will develop into a first class app.

  • Frustratingly powerful

Extremely powerful AND frustrating. Your standard stylus won't do you any good so they recommend your finger (nail) or a certain $60 stylus. Plus factor in the hours you have to play with it to have it learn your style - if it even does - don't get me wrong I think this is an awesome app. It's just extremely frustrating to get to the point where it can even be of any use. It has a mind of its own until that point: notes appear in odd places, rests, etc., and on the iPhone screen as small as it is? No way. iPad yes and I'm staying with it because future versions are supposed to employ their sound to notation technology. I'm rooting for it.
