Description of The Portland Collection Vol. 1

This sample app demonstrates the features of the full Portland Collection, Vol. 1 app, which can be purchased for $24.99. The full app contains clearly readable notation for the 318 jigs and reels in this popular tune book, which has become ubiquitous among contra dance and other musicians. Irish, Scottish, Québécois, Appalachian, and New England genres are represented. The tunes are both traditional and recently composed, from local, (Portland, Oregon) treasures to national contra dance standards. There is an extensive commentary on every tune including stories about the tunes from their composers. There are chord suggestions, a discography, a bibliography, and more. The tunes and their histories were collected from many Portland contra dance musicians who generously gave of their time and talent to help create this comprehensive musical resource. All features of The Portland Collection, Vol. 1 (book) are included in this app. App Features: • Quickly display any tune in the The Portland Collection, Vol. 1 through the Search mechanism. • Learn more about each tune through the Information feature, which displays the Note on the Tune while the tune itself is visible. • Create portfolios of tunes (Events) specific to your separate music occasions. • Add your own tunes to the app. • Use the TuneLibrarian app to collect tunes from this and other Transported Productions tune apps into a single library with the ability to group tunes into medleys. Events can be created and shared via AirDrop, email, and file sharing apps. You can find instructions for this app at http://www.TransportedProductions.com/iDeas

Reviews of The Portland Collection Vol. 1

  • Cannot purchase entire book.

This just gives you a quick overview. When I click to buy the whole book, it crashes and kicks me out of the app.
  • Response to Review

This book and the other 2 volumes of The Portland Collection are presented as apps in order to eliminate the need to carry around all three volumes of the books. The app does have safeguards that prevent exporting the music within. This is a part of the royalty agreement made to the 250 copyright holders whose music is included in the books. All of their music is under copyright protection as are the books themselves. The app tunes can be exported to the TuneLibrarian (available for $4.99 in iTunes). They can be medleyed inside this app as can the music in all other apps created by Transported Productions. I suggest downloading the Portland Collection sample app free of charge and then deciding whether the many functions it offers will be useful. If so, you can use the in-app purchase feature to acquire the entire book.

  • Not ready

Prepare to be disappointed. The Portland collection is a natural for presentation in an app. An app would let you find songs quickly save them print them export them collect subsets together play them and move from one to the next with the convenience of an air pedal device. None of that functionality is available in this app. Without this functionality it's really not clear why this collection is being presented as an app. The books are more easily accessed copied and annotated. And of course then you don't need an iPad. Hopefully the creators of this app will rethink their approach and come up with a more generous user interface in the future.
