Matching System Terrible

Either I’m playing the same idiot bots as always, or if I do get matched against a human it’s someone who’s wildly out of my league and they trounce me. Either way, it’s not fun and I’m not learning anything. The game works fine, but the matching system is just awful.

Matching System Terrible

Played two games as a total novice, both times matched with people far above me who beat me without any trouble. Not sure what the point of that it

Beginner-why am I getting 10+kyu of opponent in play?

I’m a beginner, 27kyu at top. But somehow I kept getting paired with 10 kyu and once 5 kyu!!
Like I understand we should be playing with all kinds of players but I DONT ATAND A CHANCE IN THOSE GAMES!!

Great games, bad app

The matchmaking and the games seem quite fun. It’s nice to hop into a really quick 9x9 match. I really REALLY want to be able to pay to get rid of the intrusive ads in this app, as it would make it much more enjoyable. This matches on this app are very short, and you can decide you want to play and be matched up and finished in 5 minutes or less. That’s really great!

What’s not great is the automatic scoring that happens which isn’t super transparent. I think it’s Chinese rules with a Komi of 7? I’d really like to see how the computer counted things (e.g., with white or black squares overlayed on areas that were considered points for each player). The instructions for the app recommend leaving no stones in your territory, which might help with the automatic scoring. I was upset about the scoring at first, but it seems like it might be okay if you keep that in mind, despite it not being very transparent.

Overall it’s a bit of a frustrating mixed bag! On the one hand the app is pretty ugly and riddled with ads that I find obtrusive, but I would also be lying if I didn't say it was the most fun I have had on 9x9 games (especially after disabling matching with bots). It’s just so quick to get into a game and as a result I’m playing a lot more.

I really REALLY want to be able to pay to get rid of the intrusive ads in this app, as it would make it much more enjoyable. This matches on this app are very short, and you can decide you want to play and be matched up and finished in 5 minutes flat. That’s really great, BUT what’s not great is the automatic scoring that happens which isn’t super transparent. I think it’s Chinese rules? I think there’s Komi? Maybe that’s where I’m getting confused?

What a great way to spend a few minutes!

In six minutes I can have a great quick 9x9 to keep up some Go skills. So fun.

Great app ruined by invasive ads

I’ve used this app for several years. In terms of playing Go, it is wonderful: It has customizable graphics, Chinese rules with 7 komi, the option to play 9x9 or 13x13, and simple matchmaking. My big complaint, and why I have deleted it from my phone, is the ads: They are videos that play sound (and cut off anything you might be listening to), and sometimes they don’t give you the option to X out until they finish. I also strongly suspect that, because this app hijacks the sound system, it has given my phone problems making and receiving phone calls. This is inexcusable. I wish they would either go back to static, soundless ads or give me an option to pay money to get rid of ads altogether, because the game itself is everything I want in a Go app.

Best go mobile app

It’s « the » go mobile app. It’s considered legit by pros and it’s a great place for lower ranked amateurs like me to play. It always finds me an opponent pretty fast. The time settings make it so that it’s always a good time for a game. I learned a lot from playing lots of 9x9 games on this app.

Wish there were a way to get rid of ads

This is one of the best Go apps, by far, especially if you’re into small boards! However, it does have intrusive ads, and no way to get rid of them.

This is the only app I’d be willing to pay for to remove ads, but I’d be more than happy to pay a monthly subscription fee to support the app. However, no such option exists.

As such, it’s incredibly obnoxious to use, hence why I’m knocking a star of my review.

Great for quick 9x9 games

I play 9x9 on my phone all the time with GoQuest. It’s one of my most used apps. Starting a game is fast. There are plenty of players at all skill levels, and some bots too.
