Version History of Choice Compass

2.1

January 6, 2022

Updates to help information.

2.0

June 8, 2021

Release 2.0 represents multiple major changes, which are summarized here. ACCURACY -- We've added a calibration process that takes you through 3 good vs. bad choices and calibrates the algorithm to your heart rhythms. This is now required to use the app and make choices -- it adds a lot to the accuracy of the app. Now you no longer need to enter your gender; the calibration steps will select the best algorithm for you based directly on your heart activity. CONVENIENCE -- On iOS only, you can now connect to Choice Compass with a Polar or CorSense/Elite heartrate variability (HRV) monitor so you can think about your choices while you relax, and let Choice Compass do the rest. You can also choose to connect the old-fashioned way, with your finger on the web camera. Both work, and you can switch back and forth. But you do need to calibrate once before using each method. DESIGN -- We've created an all-new updated design for iOS only, too many improvements to UX/UI to list. We also removed the need to create a userID. SUPPORT -- Our new pop-ups, more informative error messages, help video and Help tab offers support and troubleshooting tips for most scenarios you are likely to experience, but let us know if there's something we didn't cover!

Based on feedback and heart rate data from multiple testers, we improved the algorithms Choice Compass uses to both detect heartbeat rhythms and analyze these rhythms. Because we found a gender difference in the data that seems likely to be produced by hormones, we now ask you to choose a gender before you use the app. If the previous version of the app was working well for you, choose "female" as your gender, because the new "female" algorithm is closest to the algorithm in the previous version. If the previous version of the app often chose what seemed like the wrong choice to you, choose "male" as your gender. Otherwise, just choose the gender that is closest to your own, and read Choice Compass Tips (in Settings) for more information about gender. Added Twitter and Pinterest sharing buttons to enable you to easily share a Choice Compass session result. Enhanced the documentation for how to achieve the best results and to further explain the science behind Choice Compass.

This version adds new functionality to help you have a more streamlined experience with Choice Compass: A Practice tab allows you to experiment with finger placement to achieve optimal heartbeat detection. Allows for restarting the session from the second choice if the first worked and the second didn't. You can now start a session from History tab by sliding your finger left on the choice you wish to re-run, then selecting "Run." Choice recording time has been shortened to 50 seconds, down from 60. The tutorial is can now be zoomed, so it is easier to read. Updated the Tutorial and Tips launched from the Settings tab. Corrected minor typos and text display problems.

Description of Choice Compass

Choice Compass is a scientifically tested decision making app that uses a patented method to access the mind-body process of decision making to help you make a more informed decision by literally "listening to your heart." Choice Compass helps you by analyzing changes in your heart rhythm that occur as you concentrate on 2 choices you are considering (like: “stay here” versus “move”). The app then reports which decision is closer to the heartbeat dynamics associated with positive, rather than negative choices. Here's an explanation of the science behind the application and how our Choice Compass decision making app works: http://www.choicecompass.com/decision-making-process/ How to Use: 1. Go through the practice and calibration processes to tune the algorithm to your heart rhythms. 2. Type in 2 short names for the two life choices you are comparing. 3. Start a 50-second countdown as the decision making app measures your heart rhythm while you also think about the decision you’re trying to get answered. 4. Once the app has finished, view the results for your choice comparison. Features: • Easy-to-use interface, with tutorial, practice and calibration at launch and tips at the top of the screen to help you learn how to better listen to your heart. • Loads previously used choice pairs. • Bluetooth heart rate monitor connectivity for sophisticated or clinical use -- compatible with Polar HRV straps and CorSense/Elite HRV monitors. • Tracks the results when a particular choice pair is tested multiple times. This way, you can see which of the two choices wins on average over time. • Tips available for making your results more accurate. • Read about the science behind Choice Compass. • Turn sound on/off. • Send feedback. • Share Choice Compass with a friend. How it Works: Researchers in neuroscience and psychology have found that unconscious processes are sometimes better at coming up with solutions to many decisions than what our everyday conscious thoughts allow. In essence, Choice Compass provides a link to your subconscious mind-body connection by using the results of basic physiological research.  It shows that a calm state of joy/compassion/excitement/bliss is accompanied by more rhythmic heart activity. About the Inventor: The creator of Choice Compass, Dr. Julia Mossbridge, is trained in cognitive neuroscience and experimental psychology. Working outside the lab on her own time, she gathered data that drives the patented algorithm that powers Choice Compass. Choice Compass is not meant to diagnose or treat any disease.  The choice algorithm is based on average data and you should use common sense when making life choices. Note: Choice Compass requires a minimum hardware of the iPhone 5S or newer in order to provide the camera frame rates necessary to detect heart rhythms used by its algorithms. Reviews of Choice Compass

  • Good idea, poor execution

Reviews from 6-7 yrs ago (app vers. up to 1.2) are almost entirely five stars; since ~5 yrs ago, however, all are one star, including mine. Obviously something went very badly wrong in the update to vers. 1.3 (2 yrs ago) and has remained unfixed despite a complete update to Vers. 2.0 (7 mos ago) and a further tweak to 2.1 (a mere 4 wks ago). Simple example: 1st choice always works fine for me, but 2nd always fails because of “finger placement,” this despite not moving my finger AT ALL! Over and over and over. (Remind anyone of Ben Franklin’s definition of “insanity”?) Also interesting that there are none of the typical dev’s replies to users’ complaints…. Do they not care? Are they not even reading them?

    Developer Response

Hello Upstate Steve -- We'd like to apologize for your experience as well as the delay in getting back to you. Version 2.0/2.1 (2.1 with only a wording change) has seemed to work for most users, old and new. However, it apparently isn't working for you. We are not sure why -- we have tested the most recent version rigorously and it seems not to show the behavior you describe for us or anyone else who has contacted us. Also, the bluetooth heart rate monitor functionality seems to work fine as well. If the app continues to show this behavior for you, please return it for a refund. Also you can use the in-app email form to let us know directly if there are any other issues. Thank you!
  • Does not work

After hours on step one and two, I just give up! Unfortunately because the idea is cool!

    Developer Response

Hi Lisa, I'm sorry to hear that -- and also sorry that we didn't realize we could respond to app reviews, so the response is late as well. For whatever reason (sometimes low blood pressure, sometimes finger temperature) the app doesn't work for some people. I'm sorry it didn't work for you! The good thing is, if you have a Bluetooth monitor compatible with Choice Compass, you can use that instead, and it's a lot easier for most people!
  • It Doesn’t Work

I like the idea of this app, but it doesn’t work. It was tested using several people and horrifying scenarios such as should someone leave an abusive relationship. It was telling people to stay in abusive relationships. Don’t use this app. Use common sense instead.

    Developer Response

Hi JillyBean42 -- This is exactly why we created version 2.0/2.1 -- we had previously calibrated the app for people, but our calibration was based on averages across the population. We realized that this was a problem for some people and would give exactly the incorrect answer. Now we have a version (2.1) that lets people calibrate their own heart rhythms. Much more effective. Having said that, it's always better to use common sense over any other decision-making method! Choice Compass is designed to support and validate your choices, not to make them. Thank you for writing your review.
