Description of Camino de Santiago Walking

This is a guide for people walking the Camino de Santiago / Camino Francés. It has: walking directions, information about accommodation and services, route and urban maps, and background historical and cultural information. It is fully updated and revised every year, the current version was released in January 2019. This is a very simple app with no fancy stuff like GPS tracking or user interaction or pointless "social networking". In fact, once you've installed it, it will never download or upload any data (so no roaming data shocks!). It's also free of advertising. The information is organised hierarchically to make it easier to access. The buttons at the top of the screen allow you to navigate between different places. On the first level is an Overview which divides the Camino into ten sections, starting and ending in major places along the route. On the second level is a list of the places with pilgrim accommodation in the section you selected. Route maps are also accessible from this level. The third level gives detailed descriptions of individual places with pilgrim hostels, services, places to eat, sights and history. The urban maps are accessible from this level.

  • Does the job but competitors are waaaaay better

A friend and I did the Camino and we each bought a different app. I this one, him the one with the red icon. And in 99/100 cases he had more up to date and better information.

This app features just the bare basics, doesn’t mention any tricks that the signs try to pull on you, none of the “regular” food stalls they’ve setup along the way.

The ONLY time this app had extra info is the one line about turning right at the red Santander sign right at the beginning of the Camino.

Hi Thanks for your review and apologies for the delay in replying. I’d like to reply to a couple of issues you raised. First of all, the information in the app has been fully updated in the latest release, it was this first time in a few years that I've had time to do a fully update and I'm happy to admit it was overdue. Regarding “tricks the signs play on you”, I presume here you mean fake yellow arrows painted to direct you past someone’s bar or shop. I mention these in places where I think it’s relevant, such as Villafranca del Bierzo, at the junction after Sahagún, in Reliegos, at the junction after La Virgin del Camino, etc. Regarding the food stalls which have appeared in recent years all along the Camino. The fact that I don’t mention them is a conscious choice. There are several reasons for this. One, they’re mobile. So, they’re there today and tomorrow they’re not. And certainly if you walk in winter they won’t be there. So my advice is still carry enough food and water to get you to the next town or village and don’t rely on mobile food stalls. Two, they’re often not licensed. That means they’re not paying taxes on their sales or their employees and they’re taking money from businesses which follow the rules, many of them family run. They’re also probably ignoring food safety and hygiene laws. Three, in summer 2017 I arrived at the top of the Alto del Perdon shortly after Pamplona. It’s a beautiful spot with views back to Pamplona and ahead to the next couple of days walk. It’s one of my favourite places on the Camino. When I got there there was a food stand running a petrol generator and playing music. My moment of quiet reflection while I enjoyed the views and recovered from the climb was kinda ruined by this racket. Now, I normally don’t have much time for people who complain a lot about how the Camino today is crap and how things were much better before. I think the Camino is still great and you still meet the most amazing people there. But at that moment my time in a place that’s special to me and where I always feel happy was ruined by petrol fumes and awful pop music. It was the first time in all the years I’ve been walking the Camino that I’ve ever felt that commercialism is taking away from what’s special. I had a similar experience in the Montes de Oca in summer 2018. Anyway, thanks for your contribution and Buen Camino! Gerald
  • Camino de Santiago app update

The latest update has wiped out my app. It is just a black screen when I open it.

Hi Camino Trekker Thanks for your feedback and apologies for the delay replying, I only saw it yesterday. Is the app working OK now? If not the first thing I would suggest would be to uninstall it and reinstall it from the App Store. That might solve the problem. The latest version (the one you're running) has been live for almost two months and I haven't received any other reports of the kind of problems you're encountering. So I'm hoping it was just a glitch. If reinstalling doesn't sort out the problem please contact me on caminoguidecontact@gmail.com Best wishes and Buen Camino! Gerald Kelly UPDATE November 2018 - I haven't had a reply back from this user. One other user reported this issue after installing the new version, uninstalling and reinstalling resolved the issue for them.
