3.4.3

November 16, 2023

Hi there! This update to Elementium includes a few bug fixes and improvements. Many of you have been asking for the ability to change units of measure without the need for a subscription. You can now do this. Units of measure are now included as part of the one-time purchase for "Advanced Tools". Of course, if you're an ION subscriber, you'll still get all the same great benefits. Those of you who use Elementium on iPad with iPadOS 15 or iPadOS 16 will also notice a number of small improvements and fixes for some cosmetic bugs. As always, stay tuned for more new features and content soon! And, if you like Elementium, please take a moment to leave a review on the App Store. - Sam

The "Density, Data and Charts" Update Thanks for using Elementium! This update includes periodic trend charts, improved element data, density measurements, and reduced download size. And, unfortunately, this is the last update that will support iOS 15. If you're still running iOS 15, now is the time to update your device. This update also fixes a crash some folks were experiencing on iOS 16. DENSITY & DATA This update includes a vast swath of improvements to element data. Most notably, elements now have density data. Density information is displayed for each element (where available) in grams per cubic centimeter. ION subscribers can also sort and filter elements by density. Density data is sourced from the National Institutes of Health PubChem database. You'll also notice a number of improvements to other data points including atomic mass, electron configuration, and discovery year. CHARTS ION subscribers can visualize the active periodic trend with interactive charts*. Choose from electronegativity, density, or atomic radius and then tap the new chart button at the bottom of the periodic table. These interactive charts make it easy to visualize trends across the elements. REPORTING INACCURACIES If you come across incorrect data, you can now report it so it gets fixed in a future update. To report data inaccuracies, tap the "..." button on an element, and then tap "Report Bad Data". UNIT TOGGLING ION subscribers can now change temperature and length units directly while viewing an element. Just tap on an element's boiling point, melting point, or radius to cycle through the available units (e.g. to change from Kelvin to Celsius). SMALL TWEAKS & IMPROVEMENTS Atomic mass, when shown in the periodic table, now responds dynamically to the size of the table. For example, at its largest size you should see up to 5 decimal places. At the smallest size, where mass is still shown, you'll only see 2 decimal places at most. And, in my ongoing efforts to improve accessibility throughout the app, dark mode colors are more legible. STORAGE SIZE The amount of space Elementium takes up on your device should now be around 33% less than the previous version (that's approximately 60 megabytes!). Huzzah for more space and less data use! As always, thank you so much for your support. Your votes on the roadmap are both encouraging and helpful, and I'll be working on the most popular requests for the next update. If you're enjoying Elementium please take a moment to leave a review -- it really helps :). Cheers, Sam *Requires iOS 16.0 or higher.

Hello! I'm excited to share "The Fuzzy Roadmap" update with you all. From the in-app settings you'll find two new items: fuzzy search and roadmap. ROADMAP You can now view and cast your vote for planned and upcoming features. Open the in-app settings and choose the "Vote on New Features" option. Here you'll find a list of planned and upcoming features. Tap the up-arrow to cast your vote for the the features you'd like to see implemented the most. I can't wait to see what ideas you're excited about; and remember to check back regularly to see the status of any planned updates. FUZZY SEARCH I've begun rewriting the element search algorithm from the ground-up using a new "fuzzy" search technique. This means search results for elements will be a lot more forgiving. For example, searching "Neptune" will show "Neptunium" and searching "Bo" will only show "Boron" and "Bohrium" (instead of every element that has the letters "b" and "o"). The results are much more accurate, more forgiving, and just as fast as before. Because this is such a large change to how search works, you'll need to explicitly opt-in to try it out. I'd love to hear what you think and how it works for you! I have quite a bit more planned for the coming weeks and months; so stay tuned (and check the new roadmap)! :) Let me know what you think by leaving a review or sending an email to me at hello[at]samspencer.art. Cheers, Sam

Hello chemists! This update includes subtle, but exciting, improvements to the look and feel of element detail screens. You'll also notice a number of performance improvements and bug fixes :). Read on to find out more! ELEMENT DETAIL LAYOUT Element descriptions are now much, much easier to read. The color of an element only affects the top portion of the screen, so you can read without straining your eyes (on a higher contrast background). Additional improvements and hints have been added to element info items for customers who use VoiceOver. I've also added a sticky header to element detail screens so you always have quick access to additional element sources, and to close out of your current element. IMPROVED EXPORTING Exporting element data is now easier than ever. If you've purchased the "Export" feature, or are an ION subscriber, you'll now see a Share button (upwards arrow in a box) on each element detail screen. Tap on the share button to select the pieces of data you'd like to export. A new "Export all data" option also lets you share all information about an element in one tap of a button. And, of course, you can still export data as before by tapping and holding on a data point.  I want to give a big thank you to Alan for taking the time to provide feedback and insight into the export feature! CUSTOM TYPOGRAPHY (FONTS) ION subscribers can now customize the font style (serif, sans-serif, rounded), weight (light, medium, regular, bold), and line spacing to make reading about elements just that much nicer. Find the new options in Settings > Typography. PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENTS You may have noticed unusually long wait times to get the Periodic Table loaded in recent updates. We're talking upwards of 2 (TWO!) seconds. That's a long time to wait around for the Periodic Table. Rest assured, this update reduces your wait time to about 30 milliseconds on most modern devices. SMALLER THINGS TO NOTE • Home Screen widgets now open to their displayed element • Filters & sorting should be more responsive • Fixed a few iPad layout issues As always, I want to give a big thank you to everyone who uses Elementium! I appreciate all of your reviews and feedback and read it all (and it often makes my day). So if you're enjoying Elementium, please take a moment to leave a review. If you have any feedback, or just want to say hey, send me an email at hello[at]samspencer.art

3.1.1

February 16, 2023

Hi there! I've been hard at work on a few wonderful improvements to Elementium these past few months. This update focuses on accessibility, performance, and in-app purchases. And, Elementium is now updated for Apple TV - perfect for projection in your classroom, or on a monitor in your lab. ION TRIALS Beginning in this update you'll be able to start a free trial of ION before deciding to subscribe. If you're on the fence about whether some of the features and tools included in ION will be helpful to you, starting a free-trial is a risk-free way to finalize your decision. And, as always, if subscriptions just aren't your cup of tea you can purchase individual features for a single, lifetime price. PERFORMANCE Performance improvements are hard to qualify, but here's what I think you'll notice: • Decreased download size • Faster app launch time • More reliable Spotlight results • Reduced battery consumption when viewing Bohr Models ACCESSIBILITY If you use VoiceOver or a screen reader, you'll notice that both the Periodic Table and element details are now much easier to navigate. Periodic elements are now a single VoiceOver item instead of disparate items. I am continuing to work on making Elementium more accessible and would love to hear any feedback; especially about what could be improved. DEEP LINKING This one is for all the power-users out there. You can now configure links to open specific elements using the elementium://element-name format. For example, to open the Nitrogen page, you'd use elementium://nitrogen. Improved support for Siri and Shortcuts is on the way; this should help out in the mean time, though! 3.1.1 BUG FIXES Fixes a number of small issues, including: • Purchasing a subscription should now immediately unlock all app content (no opening / closing required).  • Links to feedback and support are fixed.  • Resolved a crash that may have occurred on devices running iOS 15 when viewing photos for elements. I appreciate all of your love and support, and have so much more planned for Elementium over the weeks and months to come. If you enjoy the app, or find it helpful in some way, please take a moment to leave a review. And, if you're an educator or school administrator, I'd love to hear from you about how you use Elementium with your curriculum. With love, Sam

3.0.1

3.0.1 fixes an issue for some iPad users who may have seen a black screen when opening Elementium for the first time after updating. This should be fixed now: no more dark voids! Huzzah! And, if you missed what's new in 3.0, here's the run down again: RESIZABLE PERIODIC TABLE Just pinch to zoom in or out on the Periodic Table. As you zoom in or out, information will be added or removed to fit the available space (nice!). Plus, the Periodic Table layout is much cleaner and easier to read on any device. VISUALIZE PERIODIC TRENDS In addition to existing visualizations for classification, state, and orbitals you can now view trends for electronegativity and atomic radius. And, more will be added soon. ION subscribers get instant access to these new trend visualizations. SOLUBILITY CHARTS & CHECKER Check the solubility of different salts using the new solubility table, which shows a wide range of common solubilities at STP. ION subscribers get instant access to a new solubility checker to quickly check the solubility of two compounds without needing to use the lookup table. IMPROVED SEARCH Searching for elements is faster and cleaner, and when searching on the Periodic Table you'll still see elements that don't match (they'll just be dimmed instead of hidden). CONTINUED UPDATES I've still got a lot of updates and new features planned and can't wait to share it all with you. I rewrote a lot of the code in this version, so substantial updates should come faster from here on out. As always, if you have any feedback, questions, comments, or concerns please reach out to me at hello@samspencer.art or using the feedback option inside the app. And, if you have a second, please rate or review Elementium on the App Store or share it with one of your classmates or teachers!

Reviews of Elementium

  • It’s good but…

It’s really good but I have to pay to see a picture of the actual element.
  • A few tweaks required...

I am a HS chemistry teacher and I love this app... HOWEVER the background color for the metaloids make it VERY hard to read the text! Darken this bad boy up and its a five star app for sure!
  • Beautiful but a subscription

the app itself had a beautiful and fluid design, very iOS-inspired. But locking away every decent feature behind a decently hefty *subscription* is just annoying. at least offer one time purchases somewhere 🤷

    Developer Response

Hi TrentMorr, thanks for the feedback! You can unlock specific features, as needed, with a one-time / lifetime purchase and no need for a subscription. Just open up the ION page and choose the feature(s) you'd like to purchase including Bohr Models, Advanced Tools, Export Data, and Visuals. The ION subscription is designed with students -- who may only be interested in just one or two semesters of access -- in mind. I understand subscriptions aren't for everyone, so lifetime access to features will continue being offered. I hope you'll consider coming back to Elementium! If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out at hello@samspencer.art. Cheers, Sam
