Description of Nature

The world around us is an endless source of visual information, the flow of the fractal code of life. "Nature - Oscillator" is one of the attempts to translate this code to sound, using spectral synthesis algorithm of the Virtual ANS engine (software simulator of the unique Russian synthesizer ANS). The program continuously reads the image from the camera and interprets it as the spectrum of the sound. And you can easily control the scanning curve: its amplitude, type and speed. [ How to use ] Start the app and you will hear the sound immediately. Try to move the camera and you will hear the sound change. If there is no sound for some reason - try to reduce the Quality parameter in the app menu. How to change the scanning curve: * amplitude: touch the screen and slide up or down; * speed: touch the screen and slide left or right; * type: use the slider at the top of the screen. Any sound can be recorded by pressing the REC button on the right side of the screen.

  • A Close-to-Perfect App From a Stellar Developer

Alexander Zolotov’s apps are a joy to use, and I have been doing so for years. The pixelated retro GUIs of his keystone apps are a welcome and refreshing - and somewhat comforting for us older folks - change from the sleek GUIs of Moog, Korg, and Sugar Bytes’s counterparts (nothing against them, though). The necessary learning curve isn’t too steep, and almost presents a challenge to being able to use them to create music, which makes them fun as well.

Among them is Nature, which takes full advantage of the brand new dimension offered by mobile devices for sound crafting and music-making. Nature uses photo-input and interprets it into neat atonal and chaotic sounds that can be manipulated, agitated, modulated, and mitigated by the built-in oscillator.

Its only failing, and the most frequent thing I find myself criticizing, is its lack of AUv3/Audiobus/Inter-app support (as of July 2023, the time of this writing). Even though you can record your creations in realtime, being able to patch Nature through vocoder programs to be able to make wild modulations live would be an unprecedented development potentially leading to entirely new avenues to sounds never heard before.

I hope this becomes a standard in a future update. In the meantime, don’t forget to check out Zolotov’s other killer apps SunVox, Fractal Bits, and PixelWave.

  • OMG: Astounding real time camera -> ANS encoder! 🔊

Alexander Zolotov never ceases to blow my mind with his original, innovative and creative code play! This app is so overlooked, but truly wonderful! If you have his Virtual ANS this is an *essential* addition as it uses the ANS engine but driven by the optical input of the camera (data stream). Simple in concept; but infinitely variable in output potential (e.g. a visual world to ANS synthesis encoder) and you can interact with various parameters in real time too. Then there’s the ability to patch it into other systems (signal chains, FX, visual input systems et al). Just brilliant as ever - thank you for this!

  • Unique sonification app!

I dig this app and pretty much everything by this developer. I would love to see something like this that can output midi, too.
    Thanks and cheers!
