About
911 Practice Phone lets a pre-K child practice dialing 9-1-1 and talking to a pretend emergency operator. It was built by first responders for Fire Prevention Week visits to daycares and preschools.
The child dials 9-1-1 on a large on-screen keypad, holds the phone to their ear, and hears a recorded dispatcher ask for their name, what's wrong, and where they are. The app listens with on-device speech recognition and answers with encouraging echo-backs ("Your name is Emma — great job"). Nothing leaves the app: no phone call is ever placed and real 911 is never dialed.
An adult sets up the session first — practice location, scenario, and two preferences — behind a parental gate (an arithmetic question spelled out in words so a pre-reader can't pass it).
The app is fully offline: no accounts, no network access, no analytics, no ads, no third-party SDKs. Speech is recognized entirely on the device, never recorded, never stored, never transmitted.
