1.2.6

January 30, 2018

I’m very sorry this update took so long to get out the door. Thank you to everyone that emailed or got in touch. C H A N G E S ● Updated visual design for iOS 11 and iPhone X ● Added shortened/colloquial versions of some building names. ● Update search function to work with abbreviated names such as IM/MSU etc. ● If VoiceOver is running while using the Wand, the sound effect played when a building is detect now changes depending on the current accuracy, removing the need to manually check the accuracy. A low or awkward tone indicates a low accuracy, a neutral tone indicates medium and an upbeat tone indicates a high accuracy. Note that you can still swipe right from the building pointed at to get the old Wand accuracy. F I X E S ● Prevents an issue where the app would crash if launched from the 3D touch menu. ● Fixes a bug where help menu would not work on iOS 11 ● Removed Spartan Village building numbers from Search ● Removed 3D Touch support temporarily to fix some issues with accessibility Again, please email us at guide@rcpd.msu.edu and if that doesn’t work iMessage us with guide@rcpd.msu.edu in the address field. Sometimes fixes take a while to implement, test and make sure changes work for everyone, but we absolutely are working on every single suggestion that you have sent us.

1.2.5

June 28, 2017

This update includes the following: ● 3D Touch support for previewing the Search Tab results. ● Attempts to address a crash with certain models of the iPhone 7Plus. I’d like to say this fixes it, but we don’t see any logs on our end and none of the kind folk who left reviews bothered to follow up. If this does fix it for you and you left a review, please do leave another review saying so! I need a little help: some times crashes happen that are not made available to us. We don’t run anything on your phone that we wouldn’t want to put on ours, so there are NO hidden analytics, monitoring, etc other than those provided by Apple which are opt-in on your end. So now there’s 3 ways you can help us fix issues when the app doesn’t work the way you want or crashes. ● Go to Settings > Privacy > Analytics and Turn on Analytics along with Share with App Developers. This is the easiest for you and will not kill your battery. ● Email us at guide@rcpd.msu.edu. I will make sure it is fixed and credit you personally within the app and here. ● iMessage us, thats right, iMessage us at guide@rcpd.msu.edu. Seriously, any time of the day works: if its a bug or crash this is the fastest way to get it fixed. ● If you’re on campus, feel free to drop by our office at 120 Bessey Hall. Not only will we fix it, but leave you with a working build on the spot. Also, you get to tell me exactly what you want in the app and I'll never say no to a good idea.

1.2.4

January 30, 2017

This update addresses the following issues: ● Improved compass accuracy and tolerance for errors in case of magnetic interference. This improves Wand and Compass Lock. As of iOS 10.2, known compass issues have been addressed by Apple and all the work to compensate for errors in prior versions is included in this update. Under normal operating conditions, you shouldn’t notice any change in Wand or Compass lock. If you are still having issues, please email guide@rcpd.msu.edu. ● Font sizes increased in Search, Spotlight icons and Wand. Most text within Guide should now respond to Dynamic Text Size settings on your device. ● Added abbreviations for a few more buildings. You can also search for buildings from spotlight with their three letter codes now. ● Basic support for Continuity: Viewing a buildings details in Guide will suggest it at the bottom of the App Switcher and in Apple Maps’ autocomplete. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS ● A huge Thank you to MSU Freshman Stephen Schwarz who helped debug a crash affecting iPhone 7 Plus users. ● Another belated Thank you to Ryan Qamar who was instrumental in catching a bug in early versions of Guide. CHANGES ● New option to hide suggestions in the Search Menu. This essentially lets you open the keyboard directly to do a search when switching to the Search item, saving you a tap if you never use the suggestions. ● Added our Privacy Policy in Settings in response to your enquiries. In short, Guide does not need to and has never collected any data about your use and location. All location information is deleted once it’s used and never leaves your device. Please do reach out to us on guide@rcpd.msu.edu if you are having any issues, have feedback or even features you’d want to see in Guide. --------- The following are the major changes from the 1.2 update: ● Wand now displays an accuracy indicator, summarizing Compass and Location accuracy. ● Wand and Compass Lock for a building now include a set of concentric circles indicating your devices positioning. Keeping the circles centered will help give more accurate results. ● Wand and Compass now support full screen operation. Single tap with two fingers anywhere to hide navigation bars.

1.2.3

October 30, 2016

Urgent patch for those still on iOS 9.0. Also includes a fix for iPhone 7 Plus users where it could not verify the wider color profile. Please email us at guide@rcpd.msu.edu if you run into any issues. --- I'll begin by saying a huge sorry for the bugs some of you have been facing. While some of them were beyond my control with the release of iOS10, the majority of reasons Guide would crash since the iOS update are now fixed. While this may seem like a minor update, there are some huge changes under the hood, both to improve accuracy/performance and fix some of the issues that came up from iOS' evolution. If you still experience crashes related to mapping or any other issue, please get in touch with us at our shiny new support address: guide@rcpd.msu.edu and we'll take a closer look. This update improves compatibility with iOS 10 and fixes the following bugs: ● Fixes a crash that occurs when opening anything that contained a Map. ● Fixes an issue where Guide would insist that "Location Services" was turned off. (Sorry!) ● Fixes an issue where loading MSU Tiles on Map would get stuck and look weird. CHANGES ● Wand now provides feedback with the Taptic Engine when pointing at buildings on the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus. ● Wand and Compass Lock now incorporate hardware inaccuracies from the compass in iPhone. This means that if the compass has not been calibrated, the span of the building in Compass Lock will appear much wider. On the flip side, Wand will be much more accurate the more buildings there are around you(when the iPhone's compass is not working properly.) ● Added the option to view any campus building in Apple Maps and default to walking directions from your current location. While this does mean you can now use turn-by-turn from Apple Maps, please note that we do NOT guarantee that paths shown are the shortest or most efficient. (We're working on this, but more on that later...). NOTE: We're still seeing reports of some iPhone users unable to get accurate results with Wand. If the compass accuracy indicator is consistently Yellow or Red, please double check with the default compass App to verify that the device is functioning correctly. We're really sorry about any bugs you may have encountered. Please do get in touch with us at guide@rcpd.msu.edu if you do find one. --------- The following are some of the major changes from the 1.2 update: ● Wand now displays an accuracy indicator, summarizing Compass and Location accuracy. ● Wand and Compass Lock for a building now include a set of concentric circles indicating your devices positioning. Keeping the circles centered will help give more accurate results. ● Wand and Compass now support full screen operation. Single tap with two fingers anywhere to hide navigation bars. ● Entrance information is now enabled for all buildings on campus. ● Added the ability to manually refresh the search suggestions with the standard pull-down-to-refresh method, if they do not automatically update.

This update includes the following tweaks and bug fixes: ● Wand now displays an accuracy indicator, summarizing Compass and Location accuracy with 3 states: Red (Somethings wrong...), Yellow (Usable) and Green (All's good). The Accuracy indicator fades out after a moment. Tap anywhere outside the rings to show it again. [Accessibility] VoiceOver will focus the indicator when there is a change in accuracy level. To check accuracy manually, swipe one element past the Building name in Wand. ● Wand and Compass Lock for a building now include a set of concentric circles indicating your devices positioning. Keeping the circles centered will help give more accurate results. [Accessibility] Audio feedback is given for both centered and non-centered states. Volume is intentionally set low for now. It will be increased as soon as the centering audio can be made less intrusive to regular Wand use. ● Wand and Compass now support full screen operation. Single tap with two fingers anywhere to hide navigation bars. ● Entrance information is now enabled for all buildings on campus. ● Changed Wand behavior to be significantly more sensitive to buildings irrespective of their size. This means that buildings that were previously considered too small to be accurately pointed at(and hence ignored by Wand) will now work with Wand. ● The suggestions in Search are now sorted by distance to your current location. ● Added the ability to manually refresh the search suggestions with the standard pull-down-to-refresh method, if they do not automatically update. BUG FIXES ● Fixed Wand still acting as though off Campus, when entering campus. ● Fixed inaccurate behavior when Guide is used at speeds faster than a brisk walk. ● Fixed crash when settings for Guide were changed. ● Fixed a bug where entrances for buildings surrounding the targeted building would be shown alongside the selected building. ● Removed option from settings to "Rotate Wand Button". Price History of MSU Guide

Description of MSU Guide

Guide is an exciting new way to explore and find your way around the Michigan State University (MSU) campus in East Lansing. Designed at the Resource Center for Persons with Disabilities(RCPD) to help those with visual, spatial, and mobility disabilities discover their surroundings, Guide is interactive and provides real-time location-aware information about campus landmarks while remaining accessible and useful to all. Guide is uniquely ready to help students, employees, and visitors identify important campus landmarks using 3 core tools available when walking campus: ● WAND - Point your phone at any building on campus to discover its name and more information including wheelchair accessible entrances. ● MAP - A map that lets you view campus landmarks. Tap to drop a pin, then click on it to view a compass that locks on to the closest landmark under the pin. ● SEARCH - Use the iOS home screen search function(Spotlight) to locate any campus building by name. Once you search and identify your building, simply select it and we'll lock onto it so you can always check where it is relative to where you are without needing a map. You can even use navigation from Spotlight results to view detailed directions to a landmark. We are only getting started and have a ton of new features in the works to help you navigate campus. Stay tuned! We welcome feedback, suggestions and any issues you may be having with the app at guide@rcpd.msu.edu

  • Great app!

This app was great for finding the locations of everything on campus!
  • Good app with limitations

One major drawback to the app is that when searching for a location, you are not able to move the map from that point. The search feature locks you into a, tightly zoomed, static view of the location.

Some parking lots should also be added to the search feature so they can be searched by #.

“Spartan Village XXXX” also flood the search results when searching with a number.

The most useful feature is probably the ability to see the entrances to buildings.

The app is still lacking in iPhone X display support which is disappointing. I hope support will be added soon.

    Developer Response

Thanks so much for the detailed feedback! Sorry about the delays in support. I’ll be working as fast as I can to address everything you listed before the next semester begins.
  • Fantastic way to figure out your new surroundings

I love the way you can use the one featured a point in a direction to know what building that is over there. I also appreciate seeing what's around me and being able to set that is a target and then have an audio queue when I'm getting closer.
