Description of Int. VTE & Cancer Guidelines

This application is available in English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, and Russian. The language of the app will be determined by the language setting of the user’s smartphone. Based on international guidelines published in 2022, which were developed with methodological support from the Institut National du Cancer (INCa) in France and endorsed by the International Society on Thrombosis and Hemostasis (ISTH), this app is a practical step-by-step guide for the prophylaxis and treatment of venous thromboembolism (VTE: deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism (PE), catheter-related thrombosis) in patients with cancer, including: • Prophylaxis in hospitalized and ambulatory patients • Recommendations for the treatment of both non-catheter and catheter-related VTE • Specific recommendations related to special cancer situations • Recommendations for initial, short-term, and long-term treatment This treatment algorithm for anticoagulant use (low molecular weight heparins (LMWH), direct oral anticoagulants (DOAC), and vitamin K antagonists (VKA)) is intended for physicians and other healthcare professionals treating patients with cancer. It should not replace clinical judgement. It is based on clinical practice guidelines published in 2022: Farge D*, Frere C*, Connors JM, Khorana AA, Kakkar A, Ay C, Muñoz A, Brenner B, Prata PH, Brilhante D, Antic D, Casais P, Guillermo Esposito MC, Ikezoe T, Abutalib SA, Meillon-García LA, Bounameaux H, Pabinger I, Douketis J; International Initiative on Thrombosis and Cancer (ITAC) advisory panel. 2022 international clinical practice guidelines for the treatment and prophylaxis of venous thromboembolism in patients with cancer. Lancet Oncol. 2022 Jul;23(7):e334-e347. While these guidelines rely on the best available evidence at the time of publication, the clinician is advised to use clinical judgement when making decisions about prophylaxis and treatment of cancer-associated thrombosis (CAT).
