  • Kudos to transco

Moved by transco's review, so much that I downloaded this.
  • It makes me happy!

My wife came in and saw me struggling over this review. She pointed out that I have been trying to write it for weeks, and asked why I was having so much trouble. Before I could answer she said: "Just tell them how you feel when you play it and why".

OK, I feel happy when I play the Motion Synth. Why? Well I don't have any formal music training or innate ability, and have severe arthritis in my hands which precludes me from playing most conventional instruments but, thanks to the Motion Synth hardware and software, I can make music and that... makes me happy.

  • Brilliant

This is so awesome and the possibilities are endless. It’s been great using it with my TC Helicon Voicelive Touch 2 and for automation in Logic X. The best thing in production is being able to map multiple gestures and when you’re in ‘touch’ mode, you can actually write all gestures at once. Feels a lot more expressive and makes this specific part of producing a lot faster. Getting used to gesturing and feeling the parameters takes some getting used to so I would recommend being patient with it when first trying it out. Once you get the hang of it, it’s really amazing. Also diving in with it in Ableton, awesome stuff!!

  • Great multi-dimensional controller!

Being able to independently change three different aspects of a sound with one hand motion is pretty cool. Being able to do that while simultaneously playing notes with that same hand makes for a really expressive controller. As with any good controllers that offer a lot of flexibility, you will need to spend a little bit of rtfm time if you want to to get the most out of it, but the documentation and videos are great, and the dev team seems to have been very responsive to questions in the forum.

  • Not good.

I've been playing the violin for 3+ years and in my opinion, this is terrible. You can basically play only 2 notes. Also, the case is $150 which is WAY to overpriced. Don't waste your time.
  • Very bad.

You need to download something for it to actually make any noise, which I think is ridiculous to be honest. If you're going to make a music app, at least make it MAKE MUSIC! It seemed like a brilliant idea, but it's very disappointing I must say.
  • Difficult to Work With

It's not user friendly. The hand device doesn't fit well even after adjusting the keys. It's definitely got a learning curve. I had so much hope for this device, hopefully with time it will live up to my expectations. I will say customer support has been spectacular, they have been incredibly helpful throughout this learning process. I do agree with what another reviewer said, that this really needed a booklet or instructions in the package instead of putting videos up online one at a time when problems arise.

  • Fun! ... But can be frustrating

It's not entirely intuitive in the way it connects to GarageBand or even more frustrating to another computer. Some of the other features, like adjusting the keys to fit your hand size can be difficult to find, and there are other internal controls that I don't know what they do. So it could really use a decent manual or online instruction.

That said, once I got it up and running it's pretty amazing. Running it through Logic on my laptop you can combine all kinds of sounds using the exs24 sampler or Kontakt Player and get some incredible effects.

One thing I'd like to see in the next version. Since some instruments like the GarageBand Smart Strings can be setup to play chords by pressing a single key, it would be great if the AUUG could interface with that. Currently, even if the smart strings are setup for chords the AUUG still only plays single notes on each key.

Additional programmability would be nice as well. There are a lot of available scales included, but the ability to set each key to a specific note would be helpful for doing more chromatic things and also when setting it up to use premade drum kit samples.

But overall it's very cool and there are a lot of options. Some of the ones I requested may even be in there and I just don't know how to access them yet. Again, a detailed manual would probably help

  • Extremely disappointed

I'm really disappointed with the Auug motion synth. After a years wait, a flimsy ill-designed holding case finally showed up.
The app is sadly even more disappointing.
I purchased the $99 holder for my old iPhone 4. I had to upgrade to os7 to run the app which was fine, but have since found that the Auug app doesn't contain any sounds of its own. You have to use a third party app just to get any sound at all!
This would be fine, but Garage Band - which is recommended and has presets included does not run on os7, which is the most up to date os for the iPhone 4. The upshot is - no sound from this device.
Support is literally non existent, as Auug have insisted on using a 'wiki' system so they can 'spend more time developing'! Well it's been a year and this is all they can produce!
FAQ on the website currently has only 2 questions; 'why aren't you answering my questions?' and 'how can I order?'!!
I've been playing synths professionally for just over 20 years and this is just disappointment in a box. A complete waste of $99.
Please don't be seduced by the pretty videos on YouTube. It's not worth the bother. Two days and counting and still nothing to show for it and I'm a professional musician and tech savvy!
I hate to beat up on a start up company but at the same time, I have to be honest, this is a dreadful product.
    Avoid at all cost.

  • Breathes new life into iOS music...

It’s been a long time coming, but the AUUG Motion Synth iOS app and wearable device for iPhone are both finally here - and it’s an interesting experience! I’ve only had the app a few hours, and even though I’m not a MIDI expert, I soon got some great results both with the GarageBand presets, and by using the app as a MIDI controller for the NLog MIDI Synth app (one of my favourite iOS instruments) from Tempo Rubato.
The ability to hold and play the iPhone in one hand, and add expression and other effects simply by moving my arm is opening up a whole new approach to iOS music. It’s just surprising that no body thought of this before, because the concept is so simple and intuitive.
