Description of Food & Drink Carb Counter

Managing meals as a diabetic can be hard and frustrating at times. No longer, if you can make use of a proper meal planner. This app simplifies food management and allows diabetics to break free of boring routines. Make cooking and trying out new foods exciting again and rediscover the joy in eating out. ≡ WHY COUNT CARBS ? ≡ Especially new, unknown products and their effects on blood sugar levels are often hard to assess and so we all fall into this dull habit of eating the same things - day in, day out. Counting carbohydrates is a good solution for many people with diabetes, not just those taking insulin. The International Diabetes Association recommends "carb counting as an [effective] meal planning technique for managing blood glucose levels". ≡ WHAT DOES IT DO? ≡ This app was specifically designed for diabetics (type 1 & type 2) and aims to make the whole process easy and simple to use: • identify carbohydrates in different foods • calculate the amount of carbohydrates these foods contain for your serving size / meals • start looking at how much insulin to take for the amount of carbohydrates consumed The database contains carbohydrate values for thousands of popular foods. Simply set your serving size with the swipe of your finger and add calorie information if you struggle with the weight management part. The calculations necessary for a complete meal are automated and will offer you more flexibility, greater control and freedom of lifestyle. ≡ SIMPLE INSULIN MGMT. ≡ If you take insulin, you can set 1 CU to your preferred “insulin to carbohydrate unit ratio”. For the future, you will know exactly how many shots you will need with each carb unit you consume. It is possible to adjust the app from 5 grams to 18 grams of carbohydrates per carb unit (CU) and the app will do all the necessary calculations for you! ≡ BENEFITS OF CARB UNITS ≡ Once you learn how to count carb units, you’ll find it easy to fit a much larger variety of foods into your meal plan. This app will open up options you never knew you had! Traditionally, diabetics count the total amount of carbohydrates in their food which is difficult to keep track of and makes products hard to compare. If you count carb units instead, very different types of food will become easy to compare - regardless of their weight / serving sizes. So knowing two products have 1 CU (carb unit) is ideal for making quick decisions on what is recommendable to eat. Example: 160 g of fresh strawberries and 25 g of french fries from a large fast food company (roughly half the size of a small portion) contain the exact same amount of carbohydrates and therefore 1 carb unit (CU). So having a CU table is also great for food comparison and product substitution. ≡ APP FEATURES ≡ => Carb units & calories for thousands of food choices => Adjustable carb unit calculations (5g – 18g of carbohydrates per CU) => Quick, paperless solution to search and find the right foods => Simple serving size calculator for improved accuracy => Save personal serving sizes for later => Save regional foods & personal favorites => Create & sort lists by nutrient, ascending or descending => Nutrient filter to optimize your meal planning => VoiceOver support if you suffer from diabetic retinopathy

  • Horrible

Do not buy this app if you are trying to calculate meals as a diabetic. It does not even have fruits or vegetables as a category to choose from. Horrible app with lists of unhealthy food choices.

    Developer Response

Dear user, Unfortunately, you seem to not have looked very hard. The app has a special "Categories" section (even shown in the App Store screenshots) which includes - "Vegetables & Herbs" or - "Fruit & Fruit Products" - among 47 more categories of foods to choose from! The search results are all sorted alphabetically and getting to fresh products is as easy as searching for "Fresh Products". Results will immediately start out with A for apple until Z like Zucchini. Simply add more detail / words to zero in on more detailed results. We hope we were able to help you manage your diabetes better after these tips! Feel free to write to our support staff if you have additional questions. Cheers, team Jommi
  • Not very useful

Hit or miss on brands. Good luck actually finding staple foods.
  • Frustration

What a good idea this sounded like, and what a waist of money! You go to program a meal in, type in the name, take a photograph and then try to add ingredients. When the the meal creator box is open you can’t access foods categories. You try typing the name of the food in the search box and the intuition of the program kicks in. Typing in eggs brings up a selection of sandwiches made by “Greggs” and you can not access eggs at all even though you have checked in advance that they are there under the category “staples”. Tea gives you innumerable varieties of “steak” although persistence and the addition of the word “beverage” takes you to all manner of exotic variations on the theme of tea. In order to get categories you have to lose the meal planner box and its contents permanently. Is this just another torture for people who insist upon being diabetic?
