App is great ..But!!

I used this app for a couple of years with a premium subscription and it worked well . I cancelled my subscription for a while and in that time lost access to the email address I used to log in. I have currently logged in with a new email and have tried four or five times to upgrade to a premium account. Here is my problem and extreme frustration. The app will not let me. Because I subscribed through my iPhone it continually states that I already have an account registered with my Apple ID. I cannot access this account because I no longer have access to the email and I cannot remember the password. The contact us section is useless. It provides a confusion of options and to be hobest I don’t have four hours to spend sifting through the Miriam of choices. I clicked onto the chat option online and the icon vanished🤷. So the app works well if you can get into the bloody thing and have no issues with a previous account that you can’t access. Very very frustrating and more so because the problem should take 10 minutes to resolve in reality. I’m now looking for another app as this is obviously not a situation that is easily sorted or worth wasting my time on🤷🙈😡😡😠😡😤

Latest update is a train wreck

The latest update breaks a whole load of basic functionality. I have around 30 downloaded “paper” maps but when I try to display one I get error messages saying it cannot display it because I’m offline. That’d be a problem even if my phone was offline (I.E. when you’re in a remote place trying to display a map) but I’m in my house with a great WiFi signal so this is an utter fail. It also doesn’t seem to be able to import GPX files anymore. The import seems to work but the route won’t display, there are constant “something went wrong” error messages (for goodness sake, what kind of software developer put useless error messages like that in the software they write?) and there’s no way to set the activity type so I’m stuck with a route that can’t be displayed that will take 20 hours to walk according to the app even though it’s a 3 hour cycle ride. As another reviewer has suggested, someone needs to be fired for such an unmitigated disaster.

Updated 22 September 2024: importing a GPX file to create a route is now a premium only feature. The idea that anyone would pay money for this app is laughable. It just lurches from bad to worse with each update. I use it less and less and I’m increasingly tempted to go back to carrying a paper map on my walks. Perhaps that was always OS’s cunning plan.

Response from developer

Thanks for your feedback. We are aware that there was an issue affecting the availability of OS Maps between Sunday 5th May & Monday 6th May which meant you were unable to access mapping. We can confirm that this issue is now resolved. We apologise for any inconvenience caused during this outage and thank you for your patience.

Limited support for Canada

I couldn’t find any existing routes or trails in my region. No support for topo maps either. Might be useful in other regions but not for me.

Great to use on the road!

Love the detail of O/S maps conveniently in my pocket! Two feature requests:

1. Enable app to work with CarPlay
2. Consider adding historical O/S map layers (6 inch and 25 inch 1840s onwards)

Hi MrSaunders, thanks for your feedback and feature suggestions. We're currently tracking these to assess demand, which can then help us plan the feature roadmap for OS Maps. Thanks!

Great maps, buggy app

I’ve used the os app for years and os maps for even longer. The maps are outstanding, but the app is too unreliable to count on. Unlike other mapping apps where you can work in an offline mode, when there is a problem with the os servers, you are logged out and unable to access your downloaded maps. This can be a critical problem, so I consider the os app to be more of a planning tool than something to rely on when I’m outdoors.

There are several other buggy aspects, but most can be worked around. And as a planning tool, the os app is very helpful. It’s worth having just for the convenience of having the excellent os maps at your fingertips.

Premium version is brilliant

Gosh finally an app that delivers. Love how easy the app is to use for both basic offline navigation and advanced features like tabletop 3D for route planning. I love paper maps but this consigns them to wall posters.

Not working.

I have used this app for a couple of years now..never had a problem with it. Route planning, recording activities, ease of use… exactly what I need for long distance walks in the wilderness. However…in the last couple of weeks the app started to either not record activities, stop working half way around a route or offline maps not being available. Tomorrow I am about to travel down to Dorset to attempt a 32 mile walk along the coast around Weymouth and link up to the South Dorset Ridgeway. I had planned the route on the app as always, downloaded the gpx file to my Garmin watch…. now I can’t open the app on my iPhone at all. Have tried to log in and nothing…I have just renewed my subscription…and now I can’t use it. Very angry and frustrated … just goes to show that you should never rely on this technology…back to using paper maps for me. 🙄

Update: started working again on the morning of the walk(7/5/24) …yet again, half way around the walk it stopped working again..therefore losing at least 10 miles of information. Have decided to use another app…as this has happened 4 times in the last 2 weeks.

Used to be a good app

I’m leaving a positive review as historically the app has been excellent and I don’t want to tank OS’s record - however since a recent major update it is borderline unusable. Maps take minutes to load (on an iPhone 15 pro) and usually requires closing the app and restarting even on gigabit WiFi. What this means when using the app in the field with little to no signal is that it’s unusable and wholly unfit for purpose. Downloaded maps also have this problem and often refuse to load without an internet connection - this is a joke. If it’s not fixed in the next few months I have to cancel my subscription on renewal and come back to change this review to 1 star, as befits this app in its current state. There are better map apps out there for this purpose, and while I like supporting the OS directly, there is a limit. Developers: 1. Fix load times (or have loading actually work without restarting the app) 2. Have downloads actually work offline and instantly, as they did before All the fancy new features are dumb noise when the most basic parts of a mapping app are broken. If they can’t do this in the next few weeks, OS needs fire whoever is in charge of this debacle and hire a new team who actually uses the app outdoors.

Very poor since upgrade

Since the recent upgrade my maps say they’re downloaded but as soon as you lose 4G the APP is blank. Last week just as the mist descended I opened the APP and it asked me to login, not possible without 4G so again no maps. I’ve been out on the mountains 4 times in the past few weeks and had issues every time. I’ve used this APP for years, I’ve been extremely pleased with it and recommend it many times. I’m going to delete my maps and re-download them AGAIN!! if this APP fails again I’ll have took elsewhere. It’s such a shame as I’ve been using OS mapping for 40yrs paper and OS and before the upgrade it was a cracking bit of kit. My iPad still has the previous version which is working fine, like I say it’s such a shame, if only I could go back. I feel like I’m betraying an old friend here and hope it can be fixed. Finally before anyone thinks it’s just mine I checked with a mate of mine who is experiencing the same issues, as recently as yesterday. The message is this is only guaranteed to work where you have 4G other than that its not reliable. I’ve taken screen pics as evidence where it says downloaded but all I’ve got is a blank screen. Very disappointed

UK Cycling Routes

To be able to plan a route, so efficiently, from 4000 miles away is truly a leg up experience when it comes to planning. I’m sure we will fully appreciate this app, this tool when we get on the road in a few months. Thank you all for putting it together.
