As a 100% independent folk singer, I run my own merch table every night. Every musician knows that THIS is where the money comes from on the road. I’ve tried spreadsheets (printed and on computer), I’ve tried Square inventory (what does it even mean), and am always looking for ways to make the process of inventory easier on and off the road.
About a year ago I started selling a shirt that sold REALLY well. I offer it in Tee and racer back tank. I’m mainly touring as a support act, so my merch table size is limited. This means I don’t have the advantage of spreading out a whole lot of multiple shirt sizes on the table. The inventory function on Merch Cat is a GAME CHANGER. I can quickly see exactly how many shirts I have in each size for each show without having to dig in my bag if I’m having a great night at the table. Here’s another reason why I love the Merch Cat inventory function…
Over the past two years, I’ve spent over 600 nights in hotel rooms. The last thing I want to do when I’m home is re-count my home and road inventory. Due to the volume at the table, it’s easy to forget to track a comp item (which I still do by a hand tally and enter into Merch Cat). Merch Cat also makes it easy to sell items at a discounted price for a super fan, fellow musician, bartender, etc.. So, the inventory stays updated and the sale reports are accurate. Finally, without much hassle, I now know EXACTLY what I have on hand and in stock without question. When you’re doing a lot of fly dates, this really matters - because you can’t just have the whole back of a van stocked with tons of merch. Every pound counts. The inventory reports and tracking makes my life so much easier.
There was a tiny bit of a learning curve with me for the app, but Vanessa quickly responded to every single question I had via email. She even made time to call me! Who does that? Merch Cat… that’s who. I highly recommend this app to any musician working hard out there on the road. It helps me to run my table without stress. If I reach the point where I have a dedicated TM or Merch person, I can pass this tool along to that person for easy sales and accountability.
