Promising tool but doesn’t deliver.
AI Upscale makes use of the Photos library to source and export images. This is tedious and limiting: photographers looking for a serious tool are most likely not using the Photo app and library for their workflow, and using it only for this purpose introduces additional hurdles. The solution is to introduce AIU import and export images with the Files explorer for Pro users.
Enhanced images, as seen in the AI Upscale enhanced preview, appear to have great results: the enhanced image is sharp and has great colour depth at higher alleged dimensions. But when the enhanced image is saved back to the Photos Gallery, the result appears to be heavily compressed, with smaller dimensions than the enhanced image, and with a reduced bitrate resulting in heavy color banding. The preview in AIU looks great—so what’s happening when it’s saved?
The AIU preview is limiting, offering a sliver of detail of the enhanced image at full size, or a ‘fit to screen’ view. ‘Tap to do X’ options do not respond. Neither view is as useful as a full size, loupe view of the enhanced image for verifying details are being enhanced appropriately.
In addition to the ‘save to gallery’ option there is a ‘Share Image’ button, but this fails with the message “Failed to share image”.
Dev: I can offer you screenshots. Source images tested in 8-bit and 16-bit Jpeg and Tiff on ipadOS 18.x and 26.x All results saved back to Photos are 8 bit, heavily compressed. Version 7.0: images saved to photos look better, with no banding, but still are not the dimensions of the enhanced image. The other issues remain in v7.

Thank you for taking the time to write such a detailed review — your feedback is incredibly helpful. We’re sorry that the workflow and output quality haven’t met your expectations. We’re currently investigating the issues you described regarding: image compression and reduced dimensions after saving to Photos missing or unresponsive preview interactions “Share Image” failing limitations with Photos-only import/export Your comments about Pro-workflow support and Files-based import/export are especially valuable, and we’re already reviewing how to improve this for advanced users. If you’re willing, please contact me directly at masy@neuralfulai.com — screenshots and example files would help us reproduce the behavior across formats and iPadOS versions so we can ship a proper fix. Version 7.0 addressed part of the export pipeline, and we want to close the remaining gaps you highlighted. Thanks again for helping us improve AI Upscale — we really appreciate it.
Requires access to photo library
Response from developer
Thank you for your feedback, Richard. The app currently requests photo library access to enable smooth image selection and editing. However, you're right — we are working on adding support for the system photo picker (introduced in iOS 14+), which lets you select individual photos without granting full library access. This update will improve privacy and user control. Stay tuned — it's coming soon!
