About

Aloud turns your phone's camera into a voice that tells you what's in front of you. Point it at a room, a street, a menu, a medicine box or a letter. Aloud uses AI to understand what the camera sees and reads the answer to you out loud. It's built for blind and low-vision people, and it's useful to anyone who wants an extra sense. FOUR WAYS TO SEE • Scene: Get a clear description of your surroundings, including people, places, layout and what's happening. • Object: Find out what you're holding, whether that's a product, a package, a piece of clothing or an everyday item. • Text: Hear printed text read aloud, such as mail, labels, signs, menus, receipts and documents. • Ask: Ask a question about the photo, like "What colour is this shirt?" or "What's the expiry date?", and get an answer. ASK FOLLOW-UP QUESTIONS Every description can start a conversation. Ask about the photo you just took and get a spoken answer, with no need to scan again. VOICES THAT SOUND LIKE YOU Pick from a range of natural voices, including Nigerian-accented voices and your device's built-in voices. An on-device offline voice is also available. You can adjust the speaking speed too. YOUR LANGUAGE Descriptions and answers are available in English, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Japanese and Yoruba. DESIGNED FOR ACCESSIBILITY FROM THE START • Works with VoiceOver and TalkBack • Large, high-contrast controls • Adjustable result text size • Haptic feedback, so you can feel when a scan starts and finishes • Set a default scan mode so the camera is ready the way you like it HISTORY THAT STAYS ON YOUR PHONE Past scans and their descriptions are saved privately on your device, so you can listen to them again later. Delete any entry with a swipe. Aloud doesn't keep its own copy of your photos or scan history on a server. WHO IT'S FOR • Blind and low-vision people who want more independence day to day • Older adults who find small print hard to read • Anyone who needs a quick second pair of eyes Aloud needs an internet connection to generate descriptions. Aloud is an assistive tool, and AI descriptions can sometimes be wrong. Don't rely on it for safety-critical decisions such as crossing roads, checking medication doses or confirming allergens.
