FAQ

What are the different ways this app measures altitude?

The app offers three primary methods for altitude measurement. It can use your device's GPS location services, which is generally reliable but may struggle with small changes or indoor use. It also utilizes the device's barometer, which excels at tracking relative changes but requires calibration. Finally, it can query an elevation database for surface elevation at your location, which works even with imprecise GPS but needs network access.

How does the barometric altitude feature work?

The barometric altitude feature relies on your device's built-in barometer. To ensure accuracy, it can be calibrated using either current weather data (sea-level pressure and temperature from a nearby station) or by taking a starting point from the GPS altitude and then using the barometer to track subsequent changes.

Can I use this app without an internet connection?

Yes, you can use the app without an internet connection for altitude readings. The GPS and barometric altitude methods do not require network access. The elevation database method does require network access to poll the database, but it can work with very imprecise location data.

What devices are compatible with the barometric altitude feature?

The barometric altitude feature is available on devices with a built-in barometer. Based on the description, this includes the iPhone 6 and newer models. Older devices or those without a barometer will rely on GPS or the elevation database for altitude readings.

What is the difference between GPS altitude and barometric altitude?

GPS altitude uses your device's location services to estimate your height above sea level. It's generally good for overall position but can be less precise for tracking small changes. Barometric altitude uses the device's barometer to measure air pressure, which correlates with altitude. This method is excellent for detecting small relative changes in elevation but requires calibration to provide an accurate absolute altitude.
