Easy to use, but lacking in effective pedagogical content
Regardless which version of American English Pronunciation you download, the most they offer is some listen and repeat of random words and phrases and some traditional listening discrimination drills with items in random order. With no explicit focus on the sound being contrast for the target sound and no attention to the sound’s environment (the place in the word or the following sound), these apps are not as pedagogically effective as they could be. The graphic user interface is quite easy to use and fairly well designed, but the pedagogical content does not make these effective for a basic introduction to these sounds. The app is ok but there is no control to stop it from repeating, slow the speech and no button for higher or lower volumes.
great app!
I am a professional Vietnamese who has lived in the States for more than 20 years but I am still struggling with English pronunciation and listening skill. This app is very helpful. It does focus on vowels and words that I am often asked to repeat again when talking to native English speakers. It costs only a buck but has a lot of quality recorded sound files and exercises to keep me busy for a while.
