Oh my god

We don’t need another one of these games, THERE ARE BILLIONS OF THEM, AND THEY ARE NOT EVEN FUN, honestly, there are way to many of these games. I am not paying money for this garbage.

Wonderful game

It is an enjoyable and wonderful game. Good design with each unit in detail. And also a sound research on history of Rome and its enemies.

Well-Rounded Game

Normally I’m not the biggest fan of ancient warfare, but I found this game to be exceptional in terms of content and gameplay. While I do feel like there are a few missed opportunities, or a few overly easy or impractically difficult scenarios, much of the game itself has a lot to offer and I’d definitely recommend it over a lot of the other ancient warfare games. Kinda wish we could play around with the 300-400 AD units though…I’d like to see a remake of the Chalons or Adrianople maps.

4/5 for good effort.

No longer as good...

I gave it five stars sometime back, but lately some of my units refuse to fight, can’t select archers to fire. I’ve noticed it across the other ‘ancient’ games. Very frustrating!!!

Avoid these Updates if you have an older iPad 4

As the title suggests, the recent updates for all HexWar games are geared for newer iPads. If you have these games running properly on your older devices it is best to leave these updates alone. Unfortunately, no consideration was given to those of us who supported these games at initial release as we are left with unplayable games, or crashes during the update install. Thanks for nothing!

Recent Fixes Ruined The Game

Recent bug "fixes" ruined this game! I have been playing this (and other hex war games) for a loooong time but Ancient Rome has been my air-travel go to. Love(d) it!

However, the recent "fixes" have broken it. First of all the graphics are worse; the units seem to have been compressed and harder to see. The unit strength levels are also much more difficult to read. A 10 looks like a 1 and 3 looks like 8.

Also, some adjacent units now cannot engage each other. In the "Defending Territory" battle the enemy doesn't even advance!

I regret downloading the patch & wish I could have the old app back. Please do a re-set!

Defending the Walls Against this Update

Good game - horrible update being applied across all Hexwar Ancients and Civil War titles.

New speedy animations look ridiculous.

Cannons move like they are on ATVs. weeeeee !!!

Heavy troops like Hoplites now speed walk like a perky fitness trainer in yoga pants.

Hexwar - please put one more level of speed down so that there is an option for heavy troops and equipment to move more realistically like they once did.

Another awesome game

These are my favorite turn based strategy games on iOS period. Well worth the purchase. It combines strategic depth and breadth with tactical decision making and historical tie-ins. 5*s for sure.

Amazing

Very fun! Really has a feel of Roman war. The way units work really makes it feel like how the army's would have felt.

Good stuff

Smart ai, well balanced game. Guile is needed.

Lots of fun

Simple, but challenging enough to be entertaining. Educating on both historical and military facets.

Fun but very frustrating

Try the free lite version first, just to see what I mean and make your own opinion. When the battles are more balanced, it can be pretty fun to outwit the enemy. But the battles that are not balanced? I'll just say make sure your phone has a good case and have plenty of cigarettes laying around. Super frustrating! Flanking is almost impossible, the enemy gets reinforcements just when most of your units are depleted enough, and most importantly, the terrain bonuses are really hard to master.

However, the most frustrating part is the terrible controls. I don't know how many times I mistakenly moved a unit, or ended my turn early when trying to "ok" an attack (it's the same button!!!).

So to make a long story short, get the free lite version and see how you like that first!

Great ear game

For the traditional wargamer

Good game

Could use pass and play, and design your own level. Maybe spawn in units

Excellent

Excellent turn-based tactical game: user-friendly controls, simple game play, & lots of fun.

Incredibly frustrating

Simple stuff like not being able to flank unless you have a giant free area, veteran units still getting wiped by non vet units, basic stuff that you should be able to use to win fights is poorly or not implemented.

Especially the flanking is horrible. The whole concept of the Roman cohort was to allow units to be flexible and take advantage of opportunity but in this game you need a square mile of empty space to maneuver.

Musket smoke got it right this game is just frustrating.

Info

Good game but you pay for it and then they tell u it's only for 1 campaign, you have to keep paying to do more!!!!
Total rip off!!!!!
Should be ashamed because they say it's for the full game !!!!

Maximus Dissapointius

Overall a great game- well the ONE extra campaign that the game has that the lite version doesn't. Expected more considering I payed for it. Such a pathetic and greedy move from the money grabbing developers. DO NOT BOTHER TO PAY FOR THIS GAME
