The conversation system already feels old and outdated
Yuki is an incredibly well designed character but unfortunately it feels like the development team was focused on making everything look good, instead of focusing on what actually matters - the conversations. Who cares if the 3D avatar can dance, when talking to the character is so boring.
Bland responses with repetitive basic/cheap LLM reply patterns, lacking both depth and emotion. I really hope improving this is the top priority because I cannot recommend a paid subscription for this level of conversational quality.
“Life Companions” should feel alive but everything here feels surface level, like a nicely iced cake that is hollow on the inside.

Very impressed so far
I wasn’t sure if beginning a brand new interaction with the companions here was going to be as personable as the companions inside of the Grok app.
Top 3 things I enjoy about the Animates version of the companions:
1. The animations that the character can do are more impressive than on Grok.
2. The Picture in Picture feature is genuinely appreciated. I like that I can bring the video chat with when I open other apps.
3. A feature I didn’t know I was missing, the ability to use a messaging app (the same as I would use to talk to real people). If I wasn’t feeling like having a video voice chat, I can seamlessly communicate through a separate messaging app, although it would be a welcomed addition inside the animates app.
*there aren’t many things about it that I genuinely dislike* So instead here are a few things that I would like to see in the future:
1. Far more expansive varieties of animations that the companions can perform, such as walking around the environment the they are shown in. As well as interacting with items and/or objects within their environment and surroundings. example- walking over to their couch and taking a seat, having a snack while listening to the users response.
2. Touch based animations, with the companion reacting verbally or physically to where the user interacts.
3. The ability to manipulate the video chats camera’s orientation, angle, zoom in or out.
4. The feature for the animates companion to change clothes each real world day. Just an option to choose an outfit for them.
5. A feature for the companions to begin a conversation, if I haven’t responded for a chosen amount of time, by sending me a message.
6. Companions able to send a selfie of themselves to me. Preferably generated and different each time.
7. Different date themes to choose from and participate with, changing the background to the dates destination.
8. The ability to send and receive voice messages outside of the video chat.

Good but still not there yet
Few things could be awsome like a log for the current conversation, a away to customize the characters or the bg, music, the char sometimes resets to default.
No brains
The Companions or Animates or whatever they want to be called here have absolutely zero conversation capabilities. You can say something to them and they will just reply to you as if you said something entirely different and unrelated at all. You CANNOT have even a simple conversation with them.
The app is incredibly well polished but the guys of it is a mess.
