About

One hundred and twenty short passages from the wisdom writing of the ancient world, arranged into eight collections. The Argument with the River gathers what was said about floods, wells and irrigation. The Mouth and the Wall holds counsel on speech, silence, and the very old advice to sleep before answering. The rest cover measurement, craft, law and administration, mortality, thresholds, and the long project of reading time off the sky. Each passage runs two to five sentences and closes on a single line meant to stay with you. Everything is paraphrased in plain modern English and labelled that way, never presented as a translation, and never put in the mouth of a named historical person. Sources are given by tradition: Egyptian, Mesopotamian, Hellenic, Vedic, early Chinese, Levantine. The few pieces written for this collection in the manner of a temple scriptorium say so on the page. A new passage arrives each day, chosen by the date itself. It is the same passage for every reader, with no server deciding anything. What follows it is ordered by the themes you have been spending time on lately. Reading is measured by attention rather than a checkbox. A passage moves from glanced to read to studied depending on how long it stays open, and the star chart turns that into a sky: eight constellations, one star for each passage, brighter as the passage behind it gets more of your time. The layout is fixed, so it is the same sky on every launch and every device. Forty seals wait in the wardrobe, earned for depth, for finishing a collection, for notes written, for reading at odd hours. Locked ones show their condition and how far along you are, because an achievement you cannot see the shape of is only a surprise. Keep the passages worth returning to, write a note of up to 280 characters against any of them, and search the whole archive by phrase or theme. The palette drifts slowly across twelve decan hours, after the star tables Egyptian astronomers used to tell time at night. Switch that off if you prefer it still.
