Don’t waste your time with this app

I’m hard of hearing and want to learn ASL but I don’t have the money for a subscription and now I can’t access lesson beyond basics without paying for them. I’m so discouraged from learning ASL now because every time I try to learn it’s behind a pay wall so I’ll never have access to full communication through ASL and I’ll have to rely on lip reading or hoping I hear someone just enough to understand them.

Response from developer

We’re really sorry to hear that you’re feeling discouraged. We truly believe everyone should have the opportunity to learn ASL, and we understand how important accessibility and communication are. Otty does offer a free trial, so eligible users can try the full experience before committing to a subscription. Apple determines eligibility for introductory offers, so the trial may not be available if it has already been used on that Apple ID. If the subscription is still outside your budget, please reach out to us at support@otty-learning.com Tell us a little about your situation, and we’ll see if there’s anything we can do to help. We’re really glad you want to learn ASL, and we hope we can help you continue that journey. ❤️

Love the concept

I catch myself, only looking at the people’s mouths and not looking at the word hand movement and not helpful. I’m just picking words out that their mouth I’m not learning anything so to be honest I should just give this app one star you could easily change that because all they have to do is not move their mouths because most of the time people don’t have that to go by mouths when talking to somebody who ACTUALLY USE ASL!! horrible idea of teaching somebody ASL through mouth movements easy fix though BUT THIS APP IS NOT WORTH A DOLLAR AT THIS POINT! Like I said easy fix

Response from developer

Thank you for sharing your feedback. We completely understand your concern, and we agree that the hand movements are the most important part to focus on when learning ASL. There is, however, an important distinction in ASL that may not be obvious at first. Facial and mouth movements are actually part of ASL grammar and are called non-manual markers or mouth morphemes. They can add meaning to a sign, such as describing size, manner, intensity, distance, or other grammatical information. Some ASL signs even require a specific mouth movement as part of their correct production. At the same time, this does not mean that every ASL sign should simply be "spoken" with the mouth in English. English mouthing and ASL mouth morphemes are two different things. Our goal is to teach the visual and grammatical aspects of ASL, including the role of non-manual markers, rather than asking learners to rely on lip-reading. We appreciate your feedback because it highlights how important it is to make the distinction between the hands and non-manual components clearer for beginners. We'll keep this in mind as we improve the learning experience.

Disappointed

Was not helpful for my special needs son and I was charged after canceling the subscription and can’t get my money back.

It’s really good

It’s really good and it makes it easy to learn asl.
The only reason why I put 4 stars instead of 5 it’s because sometimes it teaches you something that u don’t need to know yet instead of things that you learn.

Good but needs fixing

It’s really good but sometimes the guy saying the signs starts doing signs the app hasn’t taught us yet and it’s confusing so I would say to let us learn the sign first and then show it in a sentence because it’s very confusing.

Learn

I don’t understand how anyone learns when the very first lesson just plays a short clip and you have to basically guess what they’re signing.

My opinion is this app

This actually helps me learn my asl

Nothing correlates

Really confusing
