The app uses a refined selection of the stars that are the brightest and situated in all four quarters of the sky. These stars are primarily selected to assist users in the Northern Hemisphere between 30° N and 60° N. This should enable the user to determine their direction of travel even if cloud obscures parts of the sky. It consists of three views/tabs. The first view - Locate - lists all the necessary details of each object - planet or star. This lists its Azimuth and Altitude; Meridian Passage and visibility (above or below horizon). Both true and magnetic bearings of the object are shown. In the case of stars their relative brightness and constellation are described where applicable. The second view - Heading - is designed so that the user moves the watch and based on its Heading it finds the nearest stars. The List of Stars found shows its azimuth and altitude together with a directional arrow to indicate a more precise location in degrees. The user can then fine tune their heading and looking at the altitudes can quickly determine which star they are looking at. The third view - Estimating a Stars altitude - describes how by using your own hand and fingers the user can estimate an altitude with surprising precision. With this information the user can appreciate how useful the stars can be in confirming their compass heading and enhance their situational awareness. The user will quickly learn these stars location and return night after night to appreciate how others have used them to safely travel for generations.
