Outstanding for Polar Alignment

This really makes setting up my scope quite simple!

Response from developer

Thank you for your kind review.

Seestar S50

Great app for new equatorial mode on Seestar S50. Allows you to set up scope in twilight/ daylight and then just need minor tweaks to get perfect polar alignment with scope once it’s dark.

Rubbish

Could only get the first screen to show on my iPhone 6. Really just a good compass and gps readout.

Response from developer

Thank you for downloading AstroLocator. I am not sure what other screens you are looking for? Astro Locator provides a compass and gps readout, yes, but also provides the elevation reading of the mount / OTA. Please do take a look at the instructions on the Help link, as it is by using all of this data together, specifically using the elevation which highlights the correct elevation based on your GPS data, that allows for the alignment of your mount & OTA. Please do feel free to reach out via the contact option in the app, and mention this review, and I will be happy to help.

How to find Polaris quickly - other wise it’s just data

Need to provide a brief on how to use the data displayed to find Polaris quickly other wise it’s just data

Response from developer

Thanks for taking the time to leave your review. Please check out the first part of the help, linked at the top of the About screen in the app (https://www.progressconcepts.com/help/astrolocator/). Hopefully this explains how to use the data. If you are still struggling, please do reach out to me via the 'Contact Support' link on the About screen, or at appsupport@progressconcepts.com, and mention this review. Thanks.

Froze up, won’t re-install

Works flawlessly.

Response from developer

Hi, thanks for your review. I am just trying to figure if you are saying that it works flawlessly, or if you have an issue with your device that is stopping it working?! If you reach out to me via the contact option in the app if there is any issue, I will be sure to help. Thanks, Neil.

yesterday the South was in the North !

yesterday the South was in the North and the North in the South...
This morning I turn off my device and it is normal.

Different Directions

Four iOS devices give 4 different readings with a variance of 35 degrees

Response from developer

Thanks for downloading Astro Locator. Astro Locator uses your device compass and sensors, so is constrained by the data they provide. If the sensors are giving incorrect data, then so too will Astro Locator. It may be that the devices are experiencing interference (note that they won't be accurate if used indoors), or your devices need re-calibrating (rotate the device in a figure of 8 type movement a few times), or that certain settings that allow the calibration to be more accurate have been turned off (things like Settings > Privacy > Location Services (On) > System Services > Compass Calibration (On) / Motion Calibration & Distance (On), or simply that your devices need a forced restart (https://www.progressconcepts.com/help/#ffs-tabbed-11). Please can you reach out to me via appsupport@progressconcepts.com and mention this, or better still, send an email via the contact option within the app so I can see the debug data too, and I will be sure to help you. Thanks, Neil. ... Update: Thanks for reaching out to me. Glad that we got your iPhone working. Neil.

Clean and simple

Simple and very useful app.

All in one

Fabulous app for any astronomer with a goto telescope as it contains all you need to set up the handset. Also I have been in contact with the creator and had some very friendly replies as well as making a suggestion he has taken on board. Excellent. Buy it !!

Love it.

Useless

Don't waste your money. Bought it hoping to find an obstructed polaris it needs unfortunately to see it.

BTW not intuitive and I work in software.

If you already know how to align your scope this sw is useless, USELESS!

Response from developer

Sorry to hear that AstroLocator didn't meet your expectations, and thank you for taking the time to feedback. The instructions can be found in the FAQs in the app, but are here for you too. Use Astro Locator to find North and check that there is uninterrupted visibility of Polaris and the target and the targets trajectory during the night. Level mount using Astro Locator by holding iPhone on top of the mount and adjusting legs. (By placing the iPhone or iPad with Astro Locator on the mount, it is possible to level it by using Astro Locator as a spirit level, i.e. the elevation reading would always want to be 0) Roughly align mount North using Astro Locator by holding iPhone against the side of the mount. (By placing the iPhone with Astro Locator along the OTA, you can then align the OTA to point north, (when the compass is at 0 / N).) Using Astro Locator by resting iPhone on top of and in line with the OTA, adjust elevation to match latitude. (Resting the iPhone on the OTA, raising the elevation until the elevation matches the latitude value (at which point the horizontal guide line in the centre will be centred). Polaris should now be visible in the polarscope where fine adjustments can be made for imaging or if visual only this will be near enough for pretty accurate go-to’s.

quite a compass

Astro Locator is quite the compass and does exactly what it is designed to do. I use it to align my telescope to true North and also set the declination more accurately than the gauges on the scope. One caveat is that, through no real fault of the program, it is really sensitive to any magnetic source. This results in false readings if not adjusted for. I have to move my 12 volt battery pack at least 75 feet away to get an accurate reading. That said, I still like the program and find it useful.
