Auslan Dictionary User Reviews

good for support!!

i am a new learner to auslan and this is acts as a refresher for the words/terms ive learnt in class. most of it works pretty well and i appreciate that i can add my own lists and revise them as they categorise words in class. the only issue i have is that i cant seem to figure out if theres a way to select a certain dialect? from my understanding depending on where you are in aus some signs can be different but im based in nsw so i want to be able to see that specific sign before any of the others. some words have multiple ways to sign and so sometimes i get confused in which one im supposed to be using. i think if there was a feature where u could select which dialect you prefer then the videos in the dictionary would filter to those. it makes it more user friendly and less daunting for new learners out there!!

This is great feedback, I'll add support for filtering your search down based on region. Keep in mind that many signs in the sign bank (https://auslan.org.au/) do not have region information attached, so it's best effort. Thanks!

Great start

A great start to an app, if possible some improvements would be so good. Such as being able to add lists easily or when searching a particular word, t have a plus sign at the top to be able to add it to a list which can be reviewed later. At the moment it is very clunky to make a list and the community lists provided aren't able to be added to my own list or able to be reviewed.
Most of the videos are very dated and there are dual entries for words rather than one entry with two videos to illustrate two ways of saying that word.
I think a dictionary option would be good so you can scroll through all of the words that have signs attached to them and click on the ones you might want to learn or add to a list, rather than having to use the search function to find a word and possibly see others you might want to learn while you're there.
I hope this feedback helps and if implemented, will change my review to 5!

Hey hey, I'm about to overhaul the app to improve the experience for adding items to lists. As for the videos, I'm afraid these just come from https://auslan.org.au/, so we're just working with what we've got. If you could email me with more details about this dictionary option you're talking about that'd be great! daniel@dport.me

Please address slurs

I really like this app and use it frequently when referencing new key word signs, but please reconsider the use of the word “aborigine” in the descriptions of signs pertaining to aboriginal peoples. Not only is it outdated, but it’s considered extremely racist in Australia, and is not used as anything but a slur.

Best Auslan app ever

Your Apple app is the best so easy to use and to navigate. The only thing is needing a few more words like example would be tank breach of Dogs fish and chips things like that but other than that our family just loves thank you Daniel

Response from developer

I'm afraid I don't control the data, it all comes from the sign bank! If you could reach out here they might be able to help out: https://auslan.org.au/

Gender signs

Is it possible to create new signs (if they don’t already exist) for gender identity? Signs for people who are gender-fluid, non-binary, etc. There are signs for these in BSL, why not Auslan?

Feedback

My only issue is I think there should be an option to slow the sign down or let you repeat the sign because some of us don’t get the signs right the first time and for someone like me who is working in the disability field we need to be able to get it right and have it at a pace that suits us

Also I might add the other feature that is important if it’s not been added already is a key word catergory for every day basics

Other then that you’ve done a superb Job

Amazing

Such a great app! So helpful to learn all the hand signals!

Auslan

Need to up date more words not a lot is in the sign that am looking for .

Great tool

Most helpful learning tool, far easier to navigate than the related website.. I would like to have the numbers 10 to 100 included. Thanks 🙏

One thing to add

Something that I have found as a support worker has been that it’s hard when your client doesn’t know what the word is associated with the sign. It would be awesome if there was a feature that could see the sign and then give you the word. I’m not sure if it’s possible but it would be good to help those still learning sign language or those supporting someone who is deaf.

Hey, thanks for the feedback. This would be quite complex, I've seen some researchers working on this but it's out of scope for what I could accomplish working on this in my spare time. I'll keep an eye on the research and see if it's feasible at some point in the future.

A problem not fixed

I had not used this app for a while so when I opened it to use it- I got this note covering the screen - it told me to update- which I tried- still got the note- I even deleted the app. and put it back on. The note is still there- it’s a good app. is there anything else I can do to get rid of this note - it makes it difficult to use the app.

Could you email daniel@dport.me with a screenshot / screen recording that shows the problem?

Redownload

Just a note on my phone the latest update I had to delete and reinstall the app as search didn’t work. Glad it was an easy fix! I’m slowly learning some Auslan and it has so many signs than other apps. Still need to go to a real class but this will help until and during that I bet.

More details needed

I would like to see a description of the sign being used, sometimes it’s hard to tell what hand shape the person is making or the direction the hand gestures is going.

Decent…

This app is good and definitely is a good started app but once you learn all the basics, it is not the best app. It doesn’t have all the words like I searched up my name, didn’t have it, searched up am, didn’t have and I searched up trying, still didn’t have it.

The dialects are wrong

Very confusing, I can’t use this as the signs confuse my deaf friend who is southern auslan but the signs in the app are a different dialect. Too many are completely different to what I have been learning and what she signs with.

Please consider a dialect setting and getting more dialect examples.

Amazing

So simple and quick. Only thing I’d add is common phrases 😊

Incredible free service

Love this app and it’s such an important companion to my Auslan learning. Incredible service for free.

I would love an option to add signs to lists from the sign video as well as the list page, but really, that would just be icing on an already great functional app.

Amazing

I use this constantly, I am going deaf in one ear and teaching my son. It’s easy to use, easy to understand and I love the review study function I’m learning a lot. I would like a little explanation of how to do the sign because sometimes it’s confusing when I’m watching. But it’s so amazing and user friendly!

Love this app.. however

Hi! I love this app. It has made learning and etc. super simple. However, I’ve noticed a lot of the finger spelling for the alphabet is the American one. It has the Australia one there too but makes it confusing as we don’t use this here in Australia. We only use the two handed alphabet which can be shown in the signbank website. Love the site tho x

Hi, this data comes directly from the signbank website, so for any issues with the data it'd be great if you could contact them. There is a button in the settings that lets you do that. Thanks!

Good for those with hearing

This has been a great tool to revise my formal learning. Especially gif if you want to look up a few signs in a rush. I would like to be able nominate my state or region to avoid some confusion while using the flash cards. Also wish we could look up common phrases. Keep up the great work.
