Has gone backwards

Used to be the gold standard in journalism - now way too much fluff, articles on lifestyle & art

$69.95 per Month

It’s $69.95 per month yet the AFR writes articles on why the government isn’t doing enough to get the cost of living down.

I’m happy to pay $20 per month & you’ll have me as a lifetime subscriber.

Nine Newspapers should think about the lost opportunities on their high subscription model.

Excessive notifications with no control

Decent app, good articles, but the notifications are ruthless. No options to tone it down or select specific alerts only.

Oh and you still get ads despite paying an expensive subscription already.

Terrific

Easy to navigate, lots of articles. Can easily scroll through the newspaper and tap on an article to make it easier to read.

Frustrating App

You cannot do “lookup” in the App to find meanings of words
A basic necessary functionality especially for a News App.

What are the developers thinking, ????????

Hopeless

Why doesn’t the AFR just copy the functionality of a good website like the NYT - why do I keep getting logged out and it’s a nightmare to change password which logs me out of The Age too. Why does the AFR do this

Subscribe for ads

Imagine paying for a subscription and still getting ads on your app

App should be called Pay $30 before downloading

Rubbish paywall gated low function low interactive UI

Share Article function in ap

Please add the function to gift articles from the app, currently it can only be done from a browser. Even if I try to open the article on my phone browser it pushes me back to the app so I can never share an article from my phone.

Audio

The updated app now cancels any audio being listened to via other apps. For example, you might be listening to Spotify and then open the AFR app only for all the audio to be cancelled from other apps. This has happened with numerous audio apps I’ve been using.

Takes over audio unnecessarily

Stops playing audio in music or podcast player when launching app. There is no reason for an app with written material to take over audio on first launch without waiting to see if the user wants to access audio or video content.

Response from developer

Hi Cantabuio, thanks for flagging this issue with us. We've found the bug and resolved it. Just update your AFR app to the latest version, and your audio will no longer be paused on app launch. Let us know how it goes. Cheers

App laggy and not as good as website

Freezes while scrolling and not as smooth as viewing the website in Safari

Ok user experience but…

I have been a subscriber for the past 2 years and have good experience using this app.

However I am disappointed to learn that it will soon stop working past iPadOS 15, as I don’t find there’s anything that warrants a higher version of iPadOS other than security.

I have saved the weekend editions on this device that I hope can still be retrieved on a newer device, as I find that past issues after a certain date are no longer available ,which I find highly irritating.

Response from developer

Hi there, thanks for reaching out. Rest assured, you can continue using your current version of the app. If your iPad cannot update to iOS 16, the only change is that you will no longer receive new AFR app updates. We're doing our best to support compatibility with older devices like yours, and moving forward, we would only consider a mandatory iOS update if there was a critical issue, such as an important security update. Cheers

Freezes frequently

Freezes frequently

App constantly freezes while scrolling.

App constantly freezes while scrolling. Happens every time I use the app. Very frustrating user experience. Considering cancelling my subscription.

Pagination

Since the last software update, the front page pagination is off in the iPhone App. Words are sometimes completed with one letter on the next line.

Happy that Universal Links are now supported

Thank you for today’s update which support Universal Links/deep linking so AFR links open in the app where I’m signed in, not in the browser, where I’m not signed in.

Rating amended from 1- to 5-star 👏👏👏

Scrolling

What is wrong with this app? I just want to read articles on my phone and all I get is inconsistent scrolling with articles jumping all over the place. Surely this is just basic functionality that a graduate app developer could get right?

Pretty good

Don’t mind it, but the ability to download today’s paper would be ideal to read on the plane.
