About
Wherever a handful of houses or a couple of shops share one generator to get through a power cut, the argument is always the same afterwards: whose circuit was actually on, for how long, and who owes what share of the diesel. It usually gets settled by memory, by whoever shouts loudest, or by splitting it evenly between however many households happen to be on the arrangement - which is rarely what anyone actually agrees is fair, because nobody was switched on for the same length of time as anybody else, and nobody wrote any of it down.
Backup Split keeps one thing: whose circuit was switched on, on which run of the generator, and for how long. Every run is drawn as its own strip of time, and every household on it gets its own lane inside that strip, filled in exactly where it joined and where it left - a household on for the whole run fills its lane edge to edge, one that joined an hour late fills only the part it was actually there for, and a run still going has its edge left visibly open rather than drawn as finished. Switching a household on and off takes one tap each, and finishing a run closes out anyone still switched on at that exact moment, so nobody is left running in the app forever by mistake.
What the group actually opens the app for is Shares. Every household there is drawn as a bar sized to its real share of the group's total hours - not divided evenly by how many houses share the generator, but calculated from what was genuinely switched on. Where the group also measures how much fuel a run used, the same proportion carries straight across to litres, so a household's fuel share reflects only the runs it was actually part of. A household that joined the arrangement last month has honestly fewer hours to its name, and the app does not smooth that over to make the numbers look tidier than they are.
Backup Split calculates no cost, no bill and no amount owed of any kind. It hands a group two honest figures - hours, and litres where they're measured - and leaves the actual settling up to the people involved, the way it always has been, just with a real number to start from instead of a guess. It gives no electrical, wiring or safety advice either: it records what a household reported switching on, nothing about the wiring itself. Everything stays on the phone it was typed into, with no account and no network connection of any kind.
