About

BCAT (Body Composition Assessment Tool) is a decision-support tool developed for sports and healthcare professionals assessing body composition (BC) in athletes. The app guides you step by step through a structured assessment of whether it is appropriate to conduct a BC measurement, based on recommendations from the IOC consensus on Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (REDs). HOW IT WORKS You answer a series of yes/no questions organized into eight steps: • Preparation • Initiating the assessment • Method selection • Data collection • Data interpretation • Data reporting • Communication of data • Monitoring Throughout the process, you receive color-coded guidance: Green – proceed to the next step Yellow – proceed with caution and consider appropriate actions before continuing Red – do not proceed until the issue has been addressed WHO IS THE APP FOR? BCAT is designed for sports and healthcare professionals involved in assessing body composition in athletes. It is not intended for athletes to use for self-assessment. Important: The app is a decision-support tool and does not replace professional, medical, or ethical judgment. It should be used as part of a comprehensive assessment conducted by appropriately qualified professionals. PRIVACY The app does not require users to sign in or provide personal information. Your responses are processed locally on your device. At the end of an assessment, the app may send an anonymous result status (for example, whether the assessment was completed or stopped) for statistical purposes and further development of the app. No names, email addresses, or other identifying information are collected. ABOUT THE PROJECT BCAT was developed as a bachelor's degree project in Information Systems at Østfold University College, with Therese Fostervold Mathisen as the project client. The guidance provided in the app is based on: Mathisen, T. F., Ackland, T., Burke, L. M., Constantini, N., Haudum, J., Macnaughton, L. S., Meyer, N. L., Mountjoy, M., Slater, G., & Sundgot-Borgen, J. Best practice recommendations for body composition considerations in sport to reduce health and performance risks. Available in Norwegian and English.
