Great functionality, so-so interface. Also, why is this app 1.7GB?!?

I am a long-time fan of Jeffrey Morganthaler—I give out his classic eggnog every year around the holidays by the quart—so I was enthused to hear that he had partnered with someone to make a cocktail recipe app. I’ve tried a bunch of them and many are good, but I’ve yet to find one that is truly great. I had (and still have) high hopes for Bevnap.

My first (and primary) complaint: why on earth does this app require 1.7GB of space on my device? It’s a recipe database. Recipes are mostly text. I’m no expert, but text is pretty compressible. I know the app has other features—the calculators are pretty cool—but at the end of the day the primary function is to display text and a few pictures. There is no way this app should take up more space than almost every other app on my iPhone.

I suspect that the developers used Electron rather than AppKit/SwiftUI. The result is bloated app that takes up way more space than it should.

Second, the interface itself doesn’t render particularly well on my iPhone 15 Pro. While the recipe cards themselves are beautiful, there are lots of idiosyncrasies and places where data is truncated to “fit it all in” to a certain amount of screen real estate. For example, the “Select” button text wraps to two lines on my display.

Assuming my assumption about Electron is correct, this may be a by-product… Electron is not known for producing beautiful, functional apps. Please use native frameworks!

Third, while the recipes are great, I don’t always agree with the measurements as listed. For example, I like to make my Boulevardier with a bit more bourbon rather than the classic 3 equal parts Negroni riff. I also like to add orange bitters to my Old Fashioned. It would be great if there were a way to add notes to an imported recipe card for custom preferences, or to modify an imported recipe while preserving the original.

Finally, some ability to import recipes would be really useful. If Bevnap is going to be my “one true cocktail app” I need a way to get recipes into the app that doesn’t involve typing them in manually to my phone. The gold standard would be the ability import from a website, or perhaps to automate the copy and paste process so that HTML text grabbed from Safari is imported as plain text. Even better would be an import feature that lets you add a recipe automatically from a URL, PDF, or rich text file.

Bevnap does many things well and has a lot of potential. I also love that it does not collect my data in an attempt to monetize it. I was more than happy to pay $5 to support developers doing something cool. Shrink the app size, add some UI polish and a few additional features, and you’ll have something truly special.

Powerful tool

This is really very good cocktail database tool. Have messed around with a few others over the years and in the end just created my own using Evernote. This has tons of flexibility for customizations, searching for things multiple different ways. And best of all the developers are highly responsive to feedback and improving a product. Definitely recommend.

Cool but buggy

Could be great if it worked better, would love if I could add app generated drink images

Hello, Can you please explain what part is not working so we can fix it immediately? Please reach out to us directly with the issues you are having: hello@lemel.dev

Amazing app for newbies and pros

For the beginners - there are a ton of great cocktails you can import.

For the pros - you can add ingredients, costs associated with them, ABV info, pictures, formatting is consistent. Really well thought out.

Feature requests - acid adjustment calculator and ability to add multiple garnishes

Great app for Mixology enthusiasts!

I’m not a professional bartender or mixologist. I’m just a guy who likes to have fun while entertaining at home, and I like to come up with my own riffs on classics.
This app is NOT just another compilation of 10,000 cocktails (you can google that all day long and have fun)… although it has a lot of cocktails you can access.
This app is NOT yet another social media platform (although you can share recipes with friends and community).
So, what is this? For me, it’s the electronic version of my home bar recipe book.

What do I LOVE?
- No subscription!!! It’s a one time purchase and it costs less than a nice notebook at the store. You can backup your data to the your iCloud (no new subscription needed), or to their standard backup format if you don’t have iCloud.
- Did you decide to ditch the app? Export your recipes to CSV, PDF, for your own safekeeping and use elsewhere. You’re not held hostage by this app. Other apps I’ve seen either lock you in, don’t have a native way for back-up / export, or both.
- Flexibility! I can create my own ingredients, recipes, ice, glassware, types / categories. You get to upload your own pictures for your cocktails and ingredients… and if you want to, you can add ABV, cost, etc. to your ingredients It’s as flexible as you want to make it!
- The interface is easy to use. Is there opportunity for small improvements? Sure, and I’m sure they’ll make those improvements as they go along… but overall it’s great and easy to follow.

For the record, I don’t know the guys who created the app. I stumbled upon it because I was frustrated with everything else out there and I was trying to create my own app (which was causing other frustrations). This isn’t a “friends & family review”… it’s a review from a mixology enthusiast who found the perfect app. Cheers!

Amazing!

As a bar manager, this app is amazing! Playing around with it, it felt like the developers had been poking around in my work spreadsheets and collected them all together in one place!

A couple recommendations; it would be great if I could click on an ingredient in a recipe and have it take me to the page for that ingredient, I have a system like that set up in another app and it saves a lot of time.

Also, the ability to save presets in the “what can I make” calculator. So that you can have a list of the ingredients you have say at work, and a list of the ingredients you have at home, and have them both preserved (and updatable) across sessions.

Love your work!!

Absolutely incredible!

There’s nothing out there like this and I love the way Jeff is so forthcoming with his knowledge of cocktails, calculators, recipes, etc.! We need more bartenders like him 🙌🏻🙏🏻

Very Buggy

Adding friends is an exercise that will lead you to pull your hair out. Adding a profile that you already have doesn’t seem possible, you can only create a new one, you can’t seem to login to an existing one. The app “looks” good but is so full of issues it is almost unusable.

Response from developer

The issues you mentioned are now resolved. We've made several improvements based on your experience: Profile recovery: If you reinstall the app, start over or set it up on a new device, Bevnap now detects your existing profile automatically and lets you restore it with one tap instead of forcing you to create a new one. Friend search: Adding friends has been redesigned. You can now search for people directly by name or username right from the Add Friend screen — no need to track down a friend code first. The friend code option is still available as an alternative. We appreciate you sticking with us, and we hope the updated experience is much smoother. If you run into anything else, feel free to reach out.

Love this resource on so many levels!

This app is not only fun to peruse but also incredibly versatile and extremely practical for considering sorts of cocktail bar things. The ingredients calculator is incredibly handy in thinking about how much I am paying for each drink I make at home every evening. Love this thing all around

Updates made it better!

Jeff and the team are definitely working diligently on this app. I had a few bugs when it first started but now it’s working great. I’m sure they’re going to continue to improve it and I am furiously adding recipes.

Fantastic Tool!

As someone who has followed Jeff’s career I was thrilled to see the app go live. What an amazing tool for bartenders of all levels! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND all restaurants/bars have all of their bar staff download this app.

Great tool to manage recipes!

This is a great new app. After years of saving posts and reels I now have a place to quickly create and save recipes.

Amazing start, needs refinement

Love the look and organization. Sometimes autocomplete suggestions appear when entering ingredients, sometimes not.
Very easy to miss-enter ingredients, or end up with blank fields when creating/editing.
Very excited to see this app grow and improve. Thank you for making this!

Not just for bar managers and professional bartenders. It’s for everyone.

I can’t say enough good things about this app. Not only will I be using it to help manage my bar program but I’ll be recommending it to bartenders, servers, managers, or anyone interested in making drinks. It’s completely customizable, intuitive, and just easy to use.

What I’ve Been Looking For

Most cocktail apps are designed for newbies to discover new recipes. This one has some recipes but it’s mostly about building a platform for you to catalog your own recipes you’ve created or collected. I have a notebook with hundreds of specs I’ve collected over the years and I’m so excited to finally digitize them in a practical way. The app is currently a bit buggy as it was just release but both the creator and developer have been super hands on and helpful with support.

Potential for Greatness

I have a feature request! On the main cocktail screen, when sorting by “collections,” I would love to be able to organize the order that the collections appear. For example, if I make a collection for the current bar menu (say, “winter 2026”) I want that collection to appear on top.
As it sits currently, only the curated collections are organized alphabetically, with no way to even include the user collections.

Very good app, but still a little buggy

I’m sure they’ll clear this up and part of the reason I’m posting here is to get attention to the developers. There are definitely sync issues across multiple devices.. Editing recipes on one device (iPad), does not let them show up on another device (iPhone). Toggling the iCloud sync does not solve the problem but deleting the app and re-installing it does solve the problem. Obviously that’s not a great solution. Looking forward to some bug fixes so I can use this more widely.

Holy Moly

Jeff is a bonafide chump and this app is incredible!

Bar Owner

Often times people are creating solutions to problems that don’t exist, Bevnap is the opposite. This is a thoughtful app that will be of great use to operators and enthusiasts alike.
