About
Scan the barcode on a packaged food, or type its name. BiteFax shows which of 36 tracked food additives are in it, and how the United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom, and Canada each treat them.
The same ingredient can be allowed in one country, need a warning label in another, and be off the approved list in a third. BiteFax lines those rules up side by side, so you can read them at a glance.
FOR EVERY ADDITIVE
- Four countries side by side: allowed, allowed with limits, warning label required, being phased out, or not on the approved list
- The rule in plain words
- The regulator's own words, a link to the source, and the date we last checked it
- US state laws where they differ, including laws a court has put on hold
MORE TO DO
- Compare two products: what's only in one, and what they share
- Others in the same aisle, matched to the flavor
- How processed a product is, key nutrition facts, and California's Prop 65 list
- Photograph an ingredient list when a barcode isn't found
- Reminders when a rule changes for something you scanned
- Share a result as a picture
- English, Spanish, and French; text size that follows your iPhone
WHAT THIS IS NOT
BiteFax is not health advice. It doesn't score, rank, or judge food. "Not on the approved list" is a legal status in one country, not a claim that anything is harmful.
PRIVACY
No account. No ads. No tracking. The barcode is read on your phone, and your scans stay on your phone. We count how many scans happen each day, with nothing that identifies you or what you scanned.
THE DATA
36 additives and 144 rules, each checked against the regulator that made it, each with its own date. Ingredients come from Open Food Facts (Open Database License) and the USDA's FoodData Central; both can be incomplete or out of date.
