Okay but could be better

I’ve been using the app for the last 3 weeks, it’s very slow and it doesn’t recognise the chargers on the nearby chargers however I could find them on the map! The app does take a while to register and start the charge but once charging it’s okay!! The app doesn’t load the receipts and if you click download it would throw you out the app!! It defo need some software updates

Oh my God

This app is barely functional. Unfortunately as I live in Brighton, UK I have no choice but to use it. Two main problems for me. Firstly, it always insists that there are no chargers nearby - even when I am standing next to one. You manually have to type in the charger ID to check in. Secondly it never shows any charging info - I.e. how much charge it has delivered. The display has a gauge that suggests it is supposed to show something but it doesn’t for me. Please developers, sort this out!

Overcharged!

Update January 2025: Blink have overcharged me for the third time, billing me for a charging session amounting to more kWh than my car’s battery can physically store. They ignore customer service emails and I am now reporting to Trading Standards. Whether completely incompetent and understaffed, or scammers, it amounts to the same thing.

****

One of the most expensive networks in the UK for lamppost charging. Hiked prices when wholesale prices went up and barely reduced them when they came right down again. Pricing not transparent and often doesn’t reconcile with the charge time you instructed in the app. Have offshored their customer services so response times are slow and call quality is awful. Rarely reply to emails. Only positive is that I can usually initiate a charge, which seems better than a lot of reviewers.

Good afternoon, Thank you for contacting Blink Charging. World events and ongoing volatility and uncertainty regarding energy prices have pushed the global cost of energy to record levels. Even as energy levels appear to stabilise, there is still much uncertainty regarding the future of energy prices and the consistency of supply. As a result, we have taken the difficult decision to increase our prices. As always, we continue to work to keep these prices competitive. We endeavour to send out communications of any price increases prior to the event which can be found on our social media platforms of choice or alternatively via our Blink Charging App. Also, here is a link to Brighton's webpage for more info: https://www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/news/2023/price-change-electric-vehicle-charging If you have any further questions or feedback, or need help using our network please call us on 0330 111 0076, or email support@blinkcharging.co.uk. EV charging in Brighton

Blink have appalling customer service. The App has logged me out several times on my iphone. I can’t reinstate my password and email even having deleted and reinstalled app, said forgot password to reset, no luck. Blank page. The phone call help says they will escalate issues to the app developers and they will contact. They don’t. The council have allowed this company to dominate the lamppost charging here. I’m bailing out of EV lifestyle as a result. BTW- Best charging location is with IONITY never a problem with app or a fast charge.

Useless

Often doesn’t work. So many other issues often to do with the chargers not communicating with the car, the app has been broken for a long time and the support are robots and give you exactly the same answer every time. So disappointed that in 2024 the blink network is so badly run and maintained. No upgrades, slow charging, handful of bays and beholden to an app that doesn’t work. Meh.

Easy to use

I personally find this app easy to use in comparison to previous reviewers. It’s great that you can leave your car charging overnight (up to 24 hours) which is rare for public charge points and the price of a charge is reasonable (no membership or plug in fees). The app does have some bugs, for example it never picks up chargers nearby, but it is easy to input the charger ID and start a charge this way instead. I live in Brighton using only blink chargers and it’s pretty easy. Having never had a home charger, I’ve used my fair share of public EV chargers, and blink is one of the better ones for sure!

Needs a big update

The app doesn’t show chargers nearby, despite literally being stood next to them. You have to go into full map mode and scroll to find the charger you want to connect to.

There’s nowhere in the app to report an issue with a charger, whereas other apps you can mark the charger as broken or out of use

A new low for charging apps

Just dreadful. Pretty much all charger apps are terrible but this has set a new benchmark for how crappy an app and its service can be.
Only one star as zero is not an option. App could not find any chargers near me, despite me being stood next to 3. Chargers them selves fail to connect or charge multiple times before they will actually start charging. Wasted a good 30 minutes or so trying to get it to work and then paid more than double what an equivalent session at a supercharger would have cost.
An absolute disgrace. When people wonder why not get people buy EV’s, these guys are high up the list. Expensive and inconvenient. Shame on you.

What a load of rubbish

I made the mistake of buying a full electric car in Brighton and not having off-street charging. That makes be beholden to Brighton Council who, in it’s incompetent wisdom has done a deal with these clowns. Nine out of ten times I have problems trying to charge my car on Blink chargers. Problems range from: 1) the app sometimes not working at all; 2) the app not identifying the charger I’m next to; 3) the charger not connecting; 4) the chargers being out of order; 5) the charge speed when it does work being sometimes as low as 5kw; 6) there only being two super-charge stations in the entire city; 7) the telephone support staff being muppets and hard to understand as a native English speaker; 8) no follow up customer service calls despite asking to speak to a senior person each time I have the misfortune to have to phone 0330 number. I could go on (and on and on and on)! I have never experienced an organisation as shambolic and disinterested in providing a service. Blink - you are contemptible, useless and not fit for purpose. DO NOT RELY ON THIS SHOWER - oh and probably stick to petrol or diesel if you’ve got any sense. The world has gone mad but Blink top it all.

Use InstaVolt if you can…

These chargers force you to download this broken app, rather than letting you tap your card. Used the one in Darlington and realised this is the reason so many people don’t want to make the jump to electric cars. While instavolt is too expensive , the convenience of contactless debit card payments make charging quick and easy. I’ll certainly be avoiding these Blink chargers in the future. To the dev team - location doesn’t work on your app.

Very poor

Tried to get a charge in The QPark off Stephens Green in Dublin.
This app is utter garbage. Couldn’t connect to my apple account, couldn’t get it to connect to my credit card. Took a few minutes even to work out how to get to the charger I want with the ui from hell.
Apps like this must be owned by BP through a shell company with the sole purpose of keeping us on fossil fuels. That’s the only thing that makes sense. I’m an it consultant and I’ve had ev’s for ten years. Wasted 10 minutes trying to get this to work and gave up in the end.
I think that says it all.

£63 for 23 miles charging - If I could give it 0 stars I would

This isn’t a review of the app, but the service in general. Downloaded the app yesterday as I needed to charge at Lytham Saint Annes. Left my car in charge for 4 1/2 hours and it charged 23 miles. Customer Service was non-existent, I got a scripted 5000 word response which was about as useful as a chocolate fireguard. cost me £62 to charge. Do not use this service.

Total inconvenience and waste of time

If I could give this EV charging app less than 1 star I would. The app doesn’t even recognise the location of the charger so you have to manually locate. When it does get found and you follow the process of how to charge. Then whilst in app you pre- approve payment and wait for the app to initiate the charger. At this point nothing happens. Tried multiple times and different configurations to no avail. After speaking to the help I was advised to unplug the cable and try again. Guess what it doesn’t work. The app and infrastructure needs some real work to make it easier for users. It’s also a lot of lost revenue for the business. Take note

Poor app & service

Really poor app. Plus it’s a faff to get connected, the costs are hidden until you’ve arrive and plugged in (states 49p kWh online etc but was at least 59p kWh or more when I connected) but I can’t see the prices now I’m charging! When charging you can’t see what your spend actually is, you just get shown the expected end price for the time you put in. Remotely checking is another zero confidence experience - please display the real-time state of charge of the vehicle so we can see the unit is still working !! Not sure if disconnecting early from the time slot will I’ll get billed with the full expected charge cost or will I be billed for just what I’ve used? Developers please take a look at Instavolt, Ionity etc and improve. The current app will lose you many repeat customers!

Utter rubbish

The charger I wanted to use were located where the phone signal only allowed 3G. After downloading the app which took 10 minutes I couldn’t get past the welcome screen.

However I was quickly able to contact customer services. After deleting and reinstalling the app, it still didn’t work.

On the positive side I luckily avoided being fleeced by the extortionate pricing.

Failed to charge - avoid

App rubbish. Interface on charger rubbish.
Why can’t you just tap a credit/debit card, pre-auth a chunk of cash, plug in, and be billed your actual consumption? Loads of places can. Why can’t you?

Nevertheless, realising I didn’t have the special card, I downloaded the app, filled in forms, authorised a payment on my card. Then I find the charger on the app, click on charge, and it immediately charges me £60. Plug in. Lots of whirring fan noises. Sit in the car. It says ‘initialising’ - look back up 20 seconds later and it’s not charging. Look on the app and it says charge cancelled. Look on the app to try again and it says it’s unavailable.

Give up. Try to remember not come here again.

Rubbish

Doesnt work. On occasion I can get a charge started after about 30 mins of trying. No obvious reason why sometimes I can when mainly I can’t. Next time I visit Brighton I will be sure to supercharge on the motorway before coming into the city as i now understand that charging in the city itself is a non-starter. Such a shame after so much money (and doubtless disruption) installing such a substantial network.

Schroedinger’s App

So you can’t actually use this app. I tried to sign up but it cannot successfully send an OTP either by SMS or email, and you’re stuck there.

I also found it hilarious the 2 minute “press to resend SMS” timer only runs down while the app is open. It really shows the thought that went into this implementation (spoiler, it’s very little). Probably saved me the bother of extortionate charges according to other reviews.

Response from developer

Hi, We are sorry to hear of your experience and that you were unable to log into the Blink app and having difficulty with the OTP code. Please accept our sincere apologies. We would advise whenever encountering difficulties with the Blink app, attempt to start a charge as a “Guest User” on this occasion. This is an option on the home page. You can then try signing in again at a later point and create an account. When it is convenient, we would also recommend uninstalling and reinstalling the app, and ensuring it is the most up-to-date version: 2.0.0. If you ever encounter difficulties at one of our chargers, please do not hesitate to call our 24/7 helpline on 0330 111 0076, and our team will be happy to assist. Kind regards, Support Team

Timer feature is not a timer

The app implies that the timer feature will allow you to limit the time you spend charging. In fact the time element is meaningless it’s just a way of having a smaller hold placed on your bank account. This isn’t much use because charing continues beyond the timer so you still pay the same amount. Make sure you check the charge regularly and stop it manually! No idea why time is mentioned at all.
