About
Bloom Watch finds cherry and plum blossoms, ginkgo and maple leaves that are in season now, and tells you when to go.
ONE MAP FOR WHAT’S IN SEASON
• 800+ spots in 15 Japanese and 12 Chinese cities: parks, temples, streets, riversides, castles and more
• Switch between cherry, plum, ginkgo and maple; each has its own marker on the map
• A list sorted by distance, with search, category filters and one-tap directions
• Open a spot’s official website, or share its forecast with friends
BLOOM AND LEAF FORECASTS
• This season’s first bloom, full bloom, turning and leaf-fall dates for Kyoto, Tokyo, Osaka and 78 more Japanese cities (Pro)
• Forecasts for Shanghai, Beijing, Suzhou, Chengdu, Changsha and 7 more Chinese cities, updated daily
• Kyoto’s famous maple spots, such as Tofuku-ji and Kiyomizu-dera, get their own dates from past records, about three weeks ahead of the observatory’s specimen tree
• A machine learning model trained on many years of Japan Meteorological Agency phenology records, run on each city’s temperatures this year and the weather forecast
• Once the viewing window is within the weather forecast, see its weather day by day, with warnings when wind or rain may end it early
• Forecasts are for Somei-Yoshino cherry and Japanese maple; for Chinese cities they are an extrapolation, so allow one to two weeks either way
LIVE REPORTS FROM VISITORS
• Been there? Report how it looks in one tap: Buds, Opening, Full bloom, Faded (or Green, Turning, Peak color, Fallen)
• See the last seven days of reports. Anonymous, no account needed

• Japan Meteorological Agency records for each Japanese city, mostly the last ten years
• Reminders before the season starts at your favorite spots and cities
• Add each viewing window to your calendar
Note: some cities have fewer years of ginkgo and maple records, or none; for cities the agency no longer observes, the app shows their last ten years.
