About

You've decided to sit the JLPT. Bonsai is built for everything after that decision: the vocabulary of all five levels, laid out in teaching order, so the distance to N1 is something you can see — and shrink a little every day. The whole climb, in order 7,972 words across 201 short lessons, grouped into the five levels of the test: N5: 19 lessons N4: 18 lessons N3: 56 lessons N2: 43 lessons N1: 65 lessons Pick your level and the lesson list follows it. Everything works offline, there is no account to create, and your progress syncs privately between your devices through iCloud. Five angles on every lesson A word rarely sticks the first time, so each lesson can be worked five ways: read the vocab list and hear every word, sort flashcards by what you already know, race two-choice rounds in Train, pair words with meanings in Match, and rebuild each reading from kana tiles in Learn. Then sit the test in miniature Every lesson ends in a ladder of challenges: ten questions a rung, 80% to pass, three stars for a perfect run. The rungs harden as you climb — first you recognise the word, then you recall it, and near the top you only hear it, nothing on screen, the way the exam's listening section will play it. Pass a rung and the next one opens. Grow N5 for free Sweep the opening lessons — three stars on every one of their challenges — and the whole N5 level, all 19 lessons, unlocks for good, free. A clean sweep is a high bar. That's the point: clear it, and you've earned the level above. Every word, spoken All 7,972 words carry their own audio clip in a clear synthesised voice, and so does every kana. Tap a word to hear it, or let a whole lesson play through hands-free. Meanings in your language Word meanings come in English, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese and Vietnamese. The interface itself speaks 19 languages, and you choose the two separately. Kana, for when you want a refresher A complete hiragana and katakana section with five drills of its own — flashcards, a four-option quiz, a swipe quiz, listening, and handwriting scored against real stroke order. All of it free, all of it there when a reading trips you up. A streak that keeps you honest A day only counts once you've answered something, not just opened the app. The Progress tab holds your streak, your record and your climb through each level — and the Today deck, on your Lock Screen, Home Screen and Apple Watch, deals exactly the words your next challenge will ask. Premium, sized to your test date Start for nothing and see how Bonsai fits your study. Premium opens all 201 lessons: subscribe for 1, 3 or 6 months — however far off the exam is — or pay once and it's yours forever. Bonsai JLPT is the next chapter from the maker of Japanese Daily. That app gets beginners started; this one is for the long climb — from your first N5 word to your last N1 lesson. Questions or ideas? Settings → Send feedback. Every message gets read. Premium is an auto-renewable subscription (1, 3 or 6 months) or a one-time lifetime purchase. Subscriptions renew unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the current period ends. Prices are shown in the app before you buy, and you can manage or cancel anytime in your Apple ID settings.
