Updated Review 9-26-20

I’m glad that the developers listened and added “history “ to the app. It’s so much useful now. Thank you!!

Response from developer

We have updated the app to address your feedback. Now history of calculations persists through sessions of the app. You can always go back in your calculations to look up something. You can also delete each row of the calculations or delete all calculations that are older than a certain calculation in the history. While we were at it we added a Tip Calculator in the portrait mode. Simply enter the check amount and tap on Tip. Also there is support for Dark Mode if you are using iOS 13.

Weird calculations

I did 4.85-4.562 and got an answer of 0.279999999999999999

That makes the calculated very unreliable since I use calculations of degrees and minutes to several decimal places and continue calculations from one sum to the other without rounding or retuning from scratch.

In response to the app developer - my exams for navigation and ship stability require stupid levels of precision. If it doesn’t provide the exact number on a simple 3dp subtraction how can I have confidence in spherical trigonometry calculations? It seems like nothing and in the real world it is nothing but in my exams which will certify me to be a Master Mariner they need to be precise in calculation and then reasonable in final answer.

Response from developer

If you did 4.85-4.562, yes you may get 0.287999999. But can you please be more specific on when this makes the calculations unreliable? Can you please go on with the rest of your calculations and tell us where you will end up with an unreliable answer? The fact that calculator shows 4.85-4.562 = 0.287999999 is because of using floating point type. There is no precise representation of decimal number with floating point types in a computer. But still this should not cause you any unreliable answers. So please let us know where this leads into giving you a wrong answer at some point? If you convert 0.287999999999 to degrees and minutes you will get 17' 16.8'', which is the same result as if you converted 0.288 to degrees and minutes.
