About

As you walk Canyon Road, reconnect your footsteps to 1100 CE to the Indigenous pilgrimage route known as "where the water flows." In the 1600s, the Acequia Madre of Canyon Road welcomed Spanish settlers who created vibrant celebrations with their families of music, art, and food against the timeless sky. In the 1880s, weary cowboys found their lantern of comfort at El Farol, a sanctuary of respite and pleasure. The 1920s brought the East Coast artists and luminaries; from Georgia O'Keeffe to D.H. Lawrence, who all discovered paradise beneath the thin magic light and whispering cottonwoods. By the 1960s, Canyon Road’s infamous Claude’s Bar embraced a colorful tapestry of queers, misfits, outlaws, saints, and sinners alike. Art blossomed into international acclaim, and by 1986, this ancient path transformed into an iconic destination for travelers and seekers across the globe—though locals found themselves increasingly distant from their own Main Street. In 2024, Canyon Road Summer Walk sought to reclaim this sacred road, inviting our community home in the summertime, every first Wednesday to walk the walk up Canyon Road. -Maggie Fine
