About
Cassette is a player for the music library on your own server.
It is a client, not a store. You run the Cassette server, your music lives there, and this app is how you listen to it on your phone. Nothing is sold here, nothing is streamed from anybody's catalogue, and there is no account to create beyond the one your own server already knows about.
WHAT IT DOES
• Plays your library — by song, artist or playlist, with everything your server holds.
• Opens on a home screen that knows what you listen to: what to put back on, favourites that have gone quiet, what you added lately, and a mix a day for each of the artists you actually play.
• Lists your library makes of itself — never played, on repeat, just added, the long ones — beside your own playlists.
• Works offline. Save a track and it plays with the phone in airplane mode, from a real file on the device rather than a cache that might have been cleared.
• Finds a song by a line you remember: the search looks through the lyrics of your own library as well as its titles.
• Lyrics that move with the music. Where your server found timed lyrics, the line you are hearing is the line that is lit — and the type breathes with the loudness of the track itself. Or switch to the lyric video: one line at a time, set in a look picked for the song.
• A radio from any song, built from your own library, and a queue that keeps going on its own when it runs out.
• The DJ: say what you are in the mood for — "rainy Sunday, slow and warm" — and it builds a set from your library, then follows what you skip and what you thumb up. (Needs a server with the DJ set up.)
• A scrubber you can aim with: the track is drawn as the shape of the music, so the quiet intro and the last chorus are visible before you drag.
• Playlists you reorder by dragging, and a queue you can see and rearrange.
• Background and lock-screen playback with artwork, and the controls on your headphones and your car stereo.
• CarPlay: your home screen, playlists and library on the car's display, with Now Playing, shuffle, repeat and the radio — no typing, nothing to set up in the car.
• Its own volume, one level for every song however it was mastered, and a crossfade between tracks — all optional, all per device.
• A sleep timer that fades out rather than stopping, and can wait for the end of the song.
• A listening report: what you have played most, and which of your artists you keep coming back to — and a recap of each month and year, told as a story you can share.
• Carry on where you left off: start a song on one device and pick it up on another.
BRING YOUR OWN SERVER
Cassette needs a Cassette server. Point the app at its address, sign in, and your library is there. The server is self-hosted: your machine, your storage, your account.
PRIVACY
No analytics, no advertising, no tracking of any kind. Your library never leaves your own server, and this app only ever talks to that server and the sign-in it asks for. The DJ asks your permission before your server sends anything to the AI service behind it. You can delete your account, and everything in it, from Settings.
