The Deal That Wasn’t
I was halfway through my second cup of ramen that week—the fifth one that month—when my flatmate Jake burst into our uni accommodation, his face lit with the kind of excitement usually reserved for free pints at society mixers.
“Mate, you have to download this app,” he said, thrusting his phone in my face. “It’s called CaterLink93. Supposedly has all these exclusive deals for campus food.”
My stomach growled in response. The dining hall’s mystery meat had lost its appeal by week two of first year, and my student loan couldn’t handle much more takeaway.
“Seriously?” I peered at his screen. The app interface looked sleek—photos of juicy burgers, fresh salads, and artisanal coffee that made my ramen look like dishwater.
Twenty minutes later, I was creating my profile. Name, email, university ID number… wait, university ID number? That seemed odd, but hunger clouded my judgment. The final permission screen mentioned something about “aura tracking” which I assumed was some marketing buzzword for user preferences.
The next morning, I woke up feeling… different. My flatmate gave me a strange look.
“Mate, you look pale. Like, literally less colorful.”
I brushed it off until my friend Zoe gasped when she saw me at the library.
“What happened to your aura?” she whispered, her crystal necklace clutched tightly. “It’s just… gone.”
I laughed nervously. Zoe was into all that metaphysical stuff, but when three more people commented on how “drained” I looked, I started wondering.
That afternoon, I opened CaterLink93 to order lunch. That’s when I saw the prices. The “£3.99 burger and drink”.
I frantically checked other items. Everything was astronomically high—three to four times normal prices.
When I tried to delete my account, a small message appeared: “Thank you for your aura donation. Premium pricing now in effect.”
As I stared at my phone in disbelief, a notification popped up: “CaterLink93: Feeding students’ bodies by feeding on their light.”
I deleted the app immediately, but my friends say my aura still hasn’t fully returned. Sometimes the best deals come with costs you can’t see on the receipt.

Bad, unusually
The app doesn't say the time when the offer works. I installed, activated and only then the staff told me that the offer was not working. It turns out that I did this for nothing.
Doesn’t work for me
It crashes upon opening for me but it works for some of my friends.
