Can’t believe this is free

I was searching for so long a good app or website to practice openings and I always herd people saying chessreps or chessable, but they are actually bad and not for people who want to learn an opening they already chose. Even though I know there is a limit to the free version, I haven’t seen a single paywall or ad since I use it. The way you can add moves is very good with nice insights, though the rest of the app may not be very intuitive (you get used to it after like a day so its not that bad). The only thing i can criticize is that there is no no-wifi mode to practice, which I think could be a great and easy addition

Good Stuff

Works!

Really awesome

Just a really cool and awesome way to help you learn and expand your opening repertoire

OK

Seems like an okay chess app, it’s cool how they show you the mistakes from your games. UI is horrendous though

Great app

Nice app that works as a really good companion to chess.com. I’ve not paid to upgrade anything on this app so consider me an unpaid review. I’m not even sure what the premium features do but I imagine they’re worth it, because the features the app provides simply for free is amazing!

My favorite thing is how it can show you moves / openings and you can try and create plans for when opponents move their pieces in different ways. I love how it connects with chess.com and shows me opening mistakes I had made! 5/5

Pretty good, not perfect

I was very excited when I started using this app, got a year subscription. Now after a week or so of use I see it has warts but hey nothing is perfect. It works, and lets you build repertoires in the best way I've seen of any app. There are a few bugs and the support staff are not fast to answer questions, so don't expect much support, but all in all, "it's better than bad, it's good!"

Great app, but buggy

Says “failed to import lichess study when I try to import a study”

Instructions on how to use the app should be better

I can’t figure out how to practice my openings properly and the app has no explanation, it’s like you just have to know how to use it. When you are practicing you have to move the pieces to specific spots first before you go through any line or something. I wish it was more clear how to use the app. It could’ve been a 5 starts but this should be better

Very good but…

This is a very good app for building and learning personalized open repertoires and has many good features. However, the support is lacking. There are several bugs that should be easy fixes but it just doesn’t happen. With that said, I use it almost everyday. Some attention to bugs and fixes/additions and this would be 5 stars.

So helpful

I am learning chess, and this app helps so much with memorizing openings👌

Amazing!

My mind works exactly how this app is designed to assist!

If your mind doesn’t work like mine, it might be a hindrance more than advantage using this app!

A game changer

I repeatedly heard that when learning focus on principles, practice puzzles, don’t bog down learning openings.

However, building a repertoire has enhanced my understanding of the game, allows me to get into games in a solid position and improved my rating.

Chessbook is the only way I’ve found to build and learn openings that work for me! 5 stars 🙌🏻

Zero support

I started an account and was signing in with Google. I put in hundreds of moves to a repertoire over a month. Suddenly, I was kicked out of the app and could no longer sign in with Google. When I made a new account with the same subscription and email, all my progress was lost. I emailed support and they never replied.

The bonus moves are a great feature

Chessbook not working

Chessbook not working, and we don’t see any support helpline, please check and share if there were any issues with the latest release yesterday.

I got an 11 game winstreak, all in all my elo went crazy

Im just some 17 year old bum nerd who enjoys chess a lot, and I wanted to get better. My tactics were good from puzzles and heavily analyzing my games and my games started to go into two cateogories, get whooped in the opening or survive the opening and whoop my oponent. I tried memorizing openings and I was able to, but once I got this app I was able to memorize way more and memorize all of it way faster. My elo was 800 and through all of the tactics study and this opening study, I reached 1400. I highly reccomsnd lichess puzzles and wintrchess.com for free game review. All in all though I was never able to actually memorize an opening tree on my own but through this app, I was able to. You will still have to study hard, but this is the best way to study. Fantastic app.

Helps

Walks you through openings.

very useful

i love this app, it helped me expand my opening knowledge quite a bit, and allowed me to freely explore the different lines of a specific opening. also I saw how masters used these openings and how they countered them. awesome app 10/10 would definitely recommend, maybe the only issue is that when studying model games, after a certain move it always gives an error and I can’t see how the match ended. I don’t know if it’s a problem with my phone or the app

It’s a shame for Chessbook

The support team didn’t respond! They also blocked my account because of political or religious reasons; it’s a shame…

What happened to this app?

The recent updates have made this app so much worse to use. When you go too deep in a line, it no longer shows stockfish suggestions. Even if you play the move on the board, there is no evaluation.

It will often say “clear best move” when the move is even with, or WORSE than the best move. Often, moves are marked mistakes that are literally the best move in the position. And even the stockfish suggestions are wrong. It will show one move that wins and three or four options that lose, but if you open the Lichess analysis, there are several moves that keep the advantage.

I love this app but I hope they fix it soon.
