I Dreamed an app like this…

Then I realized it did exist! I’m glad. It does exactly what it promises

Does the job, but has quirks.

Nice app that does what its intended to, but with some bugs and missing features. There are some menu actions that cause the app to crash, leaving me uncertain what those menu options are intended for. The list of books in-app doesn’t update automatically as books are removed from the files folder, so empty references are left in the selection folder. Reference material on how to use the app or a layout of features is either absent or difficult to navigate to, but the general use is very intuitive. (I only worry if I may be neglecting features)

There doesn’t seem to be any option for taking notes or saving positions. The chess board does not enable branches from a main line - so playing through alternative lines can get confusing. Still way more convenient than trying to refer to a physical board. iPhone doesn’t have the option to split screen run applications, so there is a niche for this exact app.

Much appreciation for developing this app. Bought the full version in support.

Workarounds Required

If you pay $4.99 so you can setup positions and play with this app enough to find workarounds for the problems listed by other reviewers, it is a very good app. You can manage your pdf on another app like Adobe and keep the books saved on this app under about a dozen or two since you cannot sort them alphabetically. Also, when you import a pdf from Adobe to this one, it shows as copied over twice. You can delete the bottom duplicate file without breaking the pdf on thus app, but will have problems if you delete the top duplicate. To correct the blank book problem, you can skip deleting the app, delete the book that doesn’t show in the viewing window, and copy it over again. NOTE: The use of a digital book is only recommended for books you already own.

Until Apple allows split view on cell phones so we can use a chess engine and read a pdf at the same time, this is our best cheapest alternative. I am not counting jail broken phones as cheaper because the security vulnerabilities they create far exceeds the $4.99 savings.

Crashes with PDFs

Same problem.

Blank Book Screen

After several months of problem-free use, I uploaded a .pdf, and the book screen has become blank and unusable. I retained data and documents, deleted app and reinstalled. Same issue. Any Fixes?

Same crashes when loading books

Sometimes when uploading .pdf books the reading panel shows entirely white and the app is rendered useless.
I have to then uninstall and reinstall the app, and then the books again.
When it’s working it’s great.

Totally awesome app!!

This is a great app for going over games from US Chess magazine pdf or any pdf chess books!! Yes you enter the move manually just like playing over the board. Works great with iPad Pro 12”. I wish there will be more option like adjusting board size, remove coordinate, different pieces, etc. but 5 start all the way. There is no other app like this that I know.

Great app

This app is perfect for reading along with chess books on the go. It does crash upon loading with a recent iOS update, but when this is fixed it will go back to being a great app.

Great! New Feature?

Thanks for the update in the orientation of the iPad.

I think it's always good to improve upon a wonderful app, so how about the syncing Amazon Kindle?

Makes reading chess books a breeze!

I was so happy to stumble upon this amazing application. It is so easy to use and makes reading chess books truly a simple task. No more setting a small magnetic set up to follow along with the book. This provides you the ability to read a PDF chess book and gives a board on the right! I would suggest support for djvu format in the future, but I do love this app! Thank you!

Huh?

A really, really useful study app - you can explore lines, study annotations, and do all those things we used to require two boards to do, while carrying an entire pdf library of chess books around with you.

Yes, there is room for improvement, but now the student need not pay 5000 dollars for an opening study, when it can be found in pdf for nothing. I suspect all these bad reviews are written by tools of the publishing houses.

Easily 5 stars. Easily.

Why no automatic?

I used the app for a little while but then gave up. It was poorly made. The position not automatically updated. Come on, what's the point if I have to move it myself? If you want to take my money, you will need to work harder. Also where is Stockfish analysis?

Setup not working

I also tried to purchase board setup but it never worked. Please fix it. wasted my $$

Paid but not working

I can confirm this app fails to process in app purchase. I paid for it and it still ask me to pay again. Not much money lost here so I won't report to Apple. But you are waned. Please fix it.

In-App Purchase Not Working & Poor Quality

Kept crashing. Unstable. Even when it was working I found it hard to get a new book. The idea of forcing us to manually make a move is not very helpful. There are other much better alternatives. If you are looking for a quality product don't use it.

WARNING: I brought the Position Setup in-app purchase, and it does nothing other than asking me to pay again. Don’t waste your money and buy anything unless it is fixed.

Edited: Same problem in the latest update. Please don’t waste your time on it.

Edited: The author is still not fixing the purchasing problem. It still asked me to pay again. I emailed the author but no response.
