Great for learning Chinese

My wife, who is Taiwanese, clued me into this podcast so that I can try to be more self sufficient when we visit her family.

I do wish all of the lessons were available instead of just the first 120

App does not work

The website CLO is fantastic. It’s helped me improve greatly in a short amount of time. The app, however, does not work properly. It is currently not possible to download any lessons beyond the initial 3 free lessons. I have purchased a subscription on the website but it either does not successfully carry over to the app after logging in, or the app has some issue downloading the files for new lessons.

Crashes on login

This app crashes when I try to login. Would LOVE to see an update!

Lame app

Crashes all the time...cannot log in.

Unable to login

Seems like this app used to be great, and CLO's website still is. But they've abandoned the app and not kept it up to date. I'm not able to even login now.

I'm a big fan

The content is excellent and has obviously been created by someone who understands the challenges of learning Chinese as an English speaker.
This is definitely the best resource that I have found after much searching.

The transcripts scroll along in time with the audio, which makes it easy to follow.

I hope you continue to add more levels!

The update is a welcome addition.

Outstanding Language Learning App

I've been using CLO for about 10 weeks and it is the best app I have found for learning Mandarin. The lessons integrate Chinese words and phrases with good explanations in English, do you can listen and absorb what is being said without needing to read a screen. That is great for when I'm walking, driving, or commuting.

Also, the app is built so that the screen follows the text as it is being spoken, like a Teleprompter. That is very helpful for reading the words to record them visually in my head. If you want, you can see the Chinese characters as well, though I haven't focused on that part.

I'm currently thought he first 20 lessons and can say a bunch of useful phrases on command now. My wife, a native speaker, says that my accent is quite good, and that the speaker in the app is very, very clear with her Chinese pronunciation.

All in all, I think the approach is very good because it continues to reuse words you have leaned while adding new ones. It is the right balance of new and old to build a solid foundation without overflowing.

One other feature I use often is the flash card approach that tests me on all the words so far (or that I choose, by lesson group). This lets me keep reviewing and marking the ones I didn't get right in order to practice them and keep them current in my head. I plan to continue through the entire series.

CLO good but could be better

I like the CLO App a lot, it's definitely much better then most of the books with CD you can buy. It would be nice if the Vocabulary review would be a bit more advanced -Leitner- comes in mind to train more the vocables you still need to learn and less the once you've already mastered. For the flash card, it would be nice to have the option to choose more then one thing you can have on the front of the card - simplified + sound or pinyin - just as an example. Well that what I would like to see. But anyway thank you for the App!

Makes Mandarin fun and easy to learn.

I was sad when I couldn't transfer my chineselearnonline podcasts to my new laptop off of my iPod but, I'm happy to of found this app. including the podcasts that I learned so much from and now by this app. I'm getting bonus material. I no longer have to write everything in pinyin.

Super app. Please add more lessons

I start needing extra help around lesson 90. Please add more lessons to the app.

Your app does everything a learner would want and it is a simple design. Not hard to use. No wasted time learning how to work the flash cards or lesson management. Just right into improving Chinese !! thanks.

best

Ive been trying many different chinese learning programs and this one is the best by far. I've purchased an expensive learning program and hhave tried out many other podcasts and apps. But this one is the greatest, it breaks down chinese characters so you really no what your learning and goes at a slow but extremely clear pace. The problem with other programs is that they teach you phrases and senteces but not the important components within them which are vital for understanding mandarin. and holy jeez its also pretty cheap, seriosly this app is great

Great app

This is a good app for learning Chinese. Works as a stand alone, but the online course adds very useful tools. The design idea of a progressive course is brilliant.

Have been waiting for something like this!

Having used other Chinese podcasts and apps before, I was really looking for an app like this that is well integrated and that you can do in small chunks at a time, for example while commuting.

This app is clean, simple and very intuitive.

The lessons are progressive, which makes it easy to build and reinforce the previous lessons. The exercises and videos make it fun... almost like a game.

The audio and text synch is also a very nice feature that helps me concentrate on the lesson better.

Great stuff, looking forward to more lessons!

Awesome start!

This is an awesome program! It teaches you both words and what each symbol means within the words to help build your vocabulary and learning.

My only problem is that there are only 20 lessons you can buy. I would LOVE to see that expanded!

Very good program - not truly free

The upside:
Lesson program set out well with visual and audio cues. Set out in a way that makes learning the basics simple.

Excellent review schedule built in to continue practicing already learnt material.

Vocabulary already learnt is used in further lessons. As someone who tought english in Taiwan it's important to review review review.

The downside:
Only first three lessons are free. There are 20 in the current program and you will beef to pay an additional $6 AUD to unlock a further 5 lessons. If your prepared to pay $18 for a course then it's no problem.

I was so impressed with the first three lessons that I have purchased lessons 4-10. I will decide again after that if I continue to buy ip yo lesson 20.

Suggestions:
I would like to see more content past the current 20 lessons. I believe that there is 60 on total (unsure of that). Would be good to see course extended.

You should charge less for the lesson downloads or offer a significant discount to download the whole product. I won't continue to pay the $6 fee for 5 additional lessons if you did go beyond lesson 20.

That said it's a really well put together course. Much better than any I've seen on the market.

Only correction in program is when you answer a question wrong in vocabulary to get shown the correct result.

Awesome app!

This is a great app to help people learn mandarin!

Great way to learn Mandarin

I really enjoyed using the first 3 free lesson and went on to buy the remaining lessons. The developers need to add more lessons in the future to make this app a fully capable Mandarin tutor. Also SRS could be employed in Flashcards to make learning experience more long lasting.
Keep it up!
