About

C.H.I.P. is a Chiptune Handheld Instrument Player: sequence and build four channel chiptune, the sound of a 1989 handheld console. Arrange sections into a song. Write notes into a four lane grid. Shape a sound with real controls, and mix the four channels. The whole interface is drawn a pixel at a time in the style of an early nineties desktop, in grey or behind a green LCD, and every control is placed on a whole pixel so nothing is ever blurred. - Four channels: two pulse waves, a programmable wave channel, and noise - A cycle accurate emulation of the console's sound hardware, checked sample by sample against recordings of the real thing - Seventeen ready made sounds to start from, each one explained, and full control when you want it - Sections you can name, reorder by dragging, and loop - Patterns you can reuse across a song, and effects on any step - A drum pad for the noise channel and a keyboard for the rest - Undo and redo throughout - MIDI in, so an external keyboard plays and writes notes - Export to WAV, export to MIDI - Opens and saves the standard song and cartridge files A new song is silent, and the distance between silent and sounds like a chiptune used to be a dozen deliberate steps. Start a beat gives you a four to the floor with a bassline and a motif. Dull on purpose: it is a starting point, not a demo. Not affiliated with or endorsed by any hardware or software manufacturer.
