About
ChordTurn spells out every inversion of any chord. Pick a root and a chord quality and it gives you the notes, in order, for root position and for each inversion above it, labelled so you know which one you are looking at.
WHAT YOU CAN DO
- Choose any of the twelve roots, C through B.
- Choose from seventeen chord qualities: major, minor, diminished, augmented, major 7, minor 7, dominant 7, diminished 7, half diminished, major 9, minor 9, dominant 9, suspended 2, suspended 4, add 9, minor 6 and major 6.
- Read every inversion of that chord, each one spelled out as notes rather than drawn as a shape.
- See each inversion named: root position, 1st inversion, 2nd inversion, 3rd inversion, and on up for the five note voicings.
WHY INVERSIONS
An inversion is the same chord with a different note in the bass, and it is the difference between a progression that lurches and one that walks. Moving from C to F is a jump; moving from C to F in second inversion is two notes shifting. Any instrument benefits, because the notes are the same whatever you play them on.
WHO IT IS FOR
Songwriters looking for a smoother path between two chords. Piano and guitar players working out voicings. Arrangers spreading a chord across parts. Anyone learning theory who wants to see, plainly, what an inversion actually is.
WHAT IT IS NOT
There is no audio, no fretboard diagram and no keyboard picture. ChordTurn gives the note names, in text, which is what you need when you already know your instrument and just want the notes. Every note is named with a sharp where one is needed, so a flat key reads in its sharp equivalent: A# rather than Bb, D# rather than Eb.
