Lighting Timer Rocks

Despite the name of the app (Cliff timer, which gauges height by the time it takes a rock to land, which is itself awesome), I particularly like the Lightning timer functionality (estimating distance be the time between the lightning and the thunder), perhaps because I find myself in thunder storms more than I find myself in high places?

Cool app 🔥

Pretty professional looking, functions well, neat idea. Underrated app.

Thank you for your review. I’m glad you enjoy the app.

Great App

This app is fantastic. For my whole life I’ve been using the 1-Mississippi 2-Mississippi method to measure height, but 280 feet sounds like a way better height than 4-Mississippis. And it can be very useful to know how far away a storm is. Great app!

FAQ

How does Cliff Timer calculate lightning height?

Cliff Timer uses the formula h = 1/2 * g * t^2, where 'g' is the acceleration due to gravity and 't' is the time in seconds between seeing lightning and hearing thunder. The app measures this time for you.

What is the formula for lightning distance in Cliff Timer?

The app utilizes the formula d = t / 5, where 'd' is the distance in miles and 't' is the time in seconds between seeing lightning and hearing thunder. This provides a quick estimation of how far away the strike is.

Does Cliff Timer work offline?

Yes, Cliff Timer functions as a standalone utility app. Once installed, it does not require an internet connection to perform its calculations, making it useful even in areas with no signal.

What devices is Cliff Timer available on?

Cliff Timer is designed for Apple devices and is compatible with both iPhones and iPads, allowing users to leverage its features across their iOS ecosystem.

How accurate is Cliff Timer's lightning distance calculation?

The distance calculation 'd = t / 5' is an approximation. The speed of sound can vary slightly with temperature and humidity, so this provides a general estimate rather than a precise measurement.

What is the age rating for Cliff Timer?

Cliff Timer has an age rating of 4+. This indicates that the app is suitable for children aged 4 and above, with no mature content present.

How often is Cliff Timer updated?

The latest version of Cliff Timer was released on November 8, 2025. While specific update frequency isn't detailed, the developer actively maintains the application.
