About
Somewhere in the world a beat is running at 96 BPM. It was running before you opened this app, and it will still be running tomorrow. Common Pulse does not start that beat. It lets you join it.
That is the whole idea, and it is why there is nothing to pair. Two players set the same tempo and hear the same click at the same instant — across the stand, across the hall, or across the world. No Bluetooth. No host. Nobody has to press play first.
HOW IT WORKS
Every beat is worked out from world time, not from the moment you tapped play. Your phone sets its clock by a public time server, corrects for the delay of its own speaker, and steps into the beat already in progress. Join halfway through a bar and you land straight on it.
MADE FOR PLAYING TOGETHER
• Sectionals and chamber groups with no conductor
• A whole section on one pulse, at every stand
• Practising the same piece in different rooms, or different countries
• Anyone who has ever tried to start two metronomes at once
WHEN A CLICK IS NOT ALLOWED
Rehearsal rooms are not always a place for a click. Feel every beat as a vibration in your pocket, or let the whole screen flash on the beats you accent. The pulse stays exactly where it was, silently.
THE DIAL
Tap the dial in time and it takes your tempo. Turn the ring to adjust it, or press an arrow to step by one. There is nothing else to learn.
METRONOME ESSENTIALS
• 20 to 300 BPM
• Up to 12 beats per bar, with accents on any beats you choose
• Quarter notes, eighths and triplets
• Three clear click sounds
• Vibration and full-screen flash
• iPhone and iPad
HOW IT STAYS TOGETHER
Every device sets its clock by the same public time server and compensates for the delay of its own audio output, so the clicks land together rather than merely running at the same speed. Without a connection it still keeps time, a little more loosely. For playing together the phone speaker or wired headphones stay tightest; wireless earbuds add a small delay that can drift.
