A Fraud Prevention App That Feels Like a Scam

This app—and the entire BrandMark system—is a textbook case of overpromising and underdelivering. It markets itself as a high-tech anti-counterfeit solution, but what it actually delivers is a non-functional app, last updated over a year ago, that can’t even focus properly on an iPhone 16 Pro Max. It doesn’t switch lenses, doesn’t autofocus, and worst of all, it requests your location for absolutely no justifiable reason. Why would verifying a QR code inside a sealed box require access to your GPS?

This experience is more than a technical failure—it’s a breach of trust. In today’s market, counterfeiting is a $1.8 trillion global problem (ICC, OECD, 2019), and 1 in 4 consumers have unknowingly purchased a counterfeit product (MarkMonitor, 2018). That’s why authentication matters. But when you put your faith in a product that comes with a “certificate of authenticity,” only for the app to break down entirely, it doesn’t build confidence—it obliterates it.

Ironically, this system meant to prevent fraud ends up feeling fraudulent itself. It creates anxiety where there was none before. If the card and app weren’t there, I’d assume my product was authentic. But now? The failed scan makes me wonder if I’ve been duped—and I’m left with no answers.

Any brand using this system should be embarrassed. It reflects poorly on your product and your customer care. BrandMark doesn’t protect your reputation—it damages it. If you want to instill real trust, don’t outsource it to a broken, gimmicky system that does nothing but sow doubt.

This isn’t anti-counterfeiting. It’s tech theater. And the joke’s on the consumer.

Bad Camera Implementation

I have an iPhone 16 Pro and can get the certificate to come into focus in the camera app. This app does not change lenses or focus so when pulling the certificate of authenticity card close like instructed it is out of focus.
