About
CropFactor turns a lens on your sensor into the full-frame numbers everybody quotes. Choose the sensor, type the real focal length and aperture, and it returns the 35mm equivalent focal length, the aperture that would give the same depth of field on full frame, the hyperfocal distance, and the near and far limits of sharpness at your subject distance.
WHAT YOU CAN DO
- Choose from eight sensor sizes: medium format 54x40, Fujifilm GFX 44x33, full-frame 36x24, APS-C Canon 22.3x14.9, APS-C Nikon and Sony 23.5x15.6, Micro Four Thirds 17.3x13, 1 inch 13.2x8.8, and an iPhone main camera at roughly 9.8x7.3.
- Read the crop factor for that sensor, calculated from the diagonal against full frame rather than looked up in a table.
- Get the 35mm equivalent focal length so you can compare any lens on any body.
- Get the equivalent f-number for matched depth of field, shown next to the crop factor. An f2 lens on Micro Four Thirds renders depth like f4 on full frame, and the app says so.
- Get the hyperfocal distance for that focal length and aperture.
- Get the near limit, the far limit and the total depth of field at your subject distance, with the far limit reported as infinity once you focus at or past hyperfocal.
HOW IT IS CALCULATED
Crop factor is the full-frame diagonal divided by the sensor diagonal. The circle of confusion defaults to the sensor diagonal divided by 1500. Hyperfocal is f squared over N times c, plus f. Near and far limits come from the standard hyperfocal depth of field formulas.
WHO IT IS FOR
Anyone shooting more than one format, buying a lens and trying to picture the field of view, planning a portrait for a specific look, or setting up a landscape frame to be sharp from front to back.
