Completely incorrect DoF

Very simple - pick a 28mm lens and 2m distance. There is a mathematical formula that will tell you the DoF. If you pick “full frame” in this app, the values seem correct. But they CHANGE when you select APS-C. Sensor size has NO EFFECT on depth of field. If you change to a 18mm lens to get the same field of view as a 28 on full frame, the DoF changes. But not if you use a real 28 mm lens.

Response from developer

Thank you for your detailed feedback and for taking the time to test the app — it’s really appreciated. There’s often some confusion around this topic, so just to clarify: depth of field depends on focal length, aperture, subject distance, and the circle of confusion, which is tied to sensor size. Because of this, when using the same lens and settings, different sensor formats can produce different DoF values. In your example, using a 28mm lens on full frame vs APS-C leads to different results because the circle of confusion is smaller on APS-C, which results in a deeper calculated depth of field. When switching to an 18mm lens on APS-C to match the same field of view, the DoF changes as expected due to the shorter focal length. The app follows standard optical formulas used in photography, but I understand how this can feel counterintuitive depending on how the comparison is set up. Thanks again for helping improve the app!
